Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and contained the information that had been requested. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service. The AQAA told us that a comprehensive pre-assessments of needs is completed prior to any confirmation of admission. People who wish to use the service are encouraged to spend time at the home and to stay for the day if they live a distance from the home. This gives them the opportunity to meet other people who are living at the home. Information about the home is given to all people who wish to use the service and this includes the homes brochure, statement of purpose, service user guide and the most recent inspection report. People using the service who returned completed surveys confirmed that prior to admission they received enough information about the home. Each person using the service has a care plan which has been developed for them by the staff in consultation with them. The care plans are reviewed every month and adjusted to meet ongoing needs. There is a medication policy in place. The AQAA advises that people who use the service are supported to self medicate and to be involved about decisions concerning their health. The AQAA states that the home tries to provide a life which reflects the wishes of Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 people using the service. People are consulted regarding preferences around the activity provision and these are then reflected in the activity programme. The AQAA also tells us that they provide meaningful activity in smaller groups whilst continuing large group activities. One person using the service who returned a survey to us said I enjoy my life here and take part in a variety of ctivities. The manager told us that meals are freshly prepared on site and they do not use frozen food. Menus are devised in consultation with the people who use the service. We received comments about the food in some of our returned surveys stated:- Apply pressure on the food contractors. The quality of the food is not bad but there is always room for improvement It could be perfect here if the food were better. Meals are overcooked. Too many tinned peaches not enough fresh fruit. The negative comments were discussed with the manager who was aware of the issues. She told us that plans have been put in place to address the problems. In the quality audit recently completed at the home it appeared the residential unit was not so happy with the food but the nursing unit was generally happy. During the past year we were told that the home had received three complaints which had all now been resolved. There have been three safeguarding adult referrals to the local authority also. The AQAA advises that staff have received training in safeguarding adults and also have access to the whistle blowing policy. Staff that completed the surveys all confirmed that the necessary pre employment checks had been carried out and that they had all received an induction. Some of the people who use the service completed and returned surveys to us. The following are some of the things they told us:The place is kept clean and the care is very good. The staff are very good and helpful. Good communication between the staff and residents. The staff care for us in every sense of the word. There is a happy atmosphere always. We are looked after and well cared for. All the staff are always so nice and they will always help you. Staff who completed the surveys told us:Whiteley provides good training for carers we are updated regularly. All carers are a team and work as a team. The home is well run and friendly What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 26th November 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
