What the care home does well

The atmosphere in the home was warm and friendly. The people living in the home said they enjoyed good relationships with the staff. They were enjoying their company and were reacting in a positive way to the support they were receiving in their day to day lives. They confirmed that they were well cared for and enjoyed the food. People said they enjoyed going out and visiting local places of interest. One person said they had just returned from a local cafe and another said he was going out to a socialclub to meet his friends. Comments included:"I am much happier living here". "Like the place, good food, like going out". "Support my family and involve them in my care". "I like it here, I have no complaints". The records are up to date and people`s care needs are well recorded and met. The staff encourage people to be independent and support them to make decisions in their day to day lives. The staff are well trained to meet the individual needs of the people living in the home. The staff team is stable and know the people living in the home very well.

The aim of the service is to provide quality psychiatric care and support in a social care setting. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 care home 12 Over 65 0 12 Brief description of the care home The homes accommodation consists of one six-bedded home and three small homes, all of which are close to each other. None of the buildings are recognisable as care homes. Each person living in the home has their own bedroom and a range of other facilities that are in line with an ordinary life in the community. Acacia House is very close to the town centre of Ashington, where there are shops, cafes and pubs. The home has its own transport and there is a good range of bus services nearby. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: A random inspection was carried out as part of the Commissions programme of visiting good services to ensure they are continuing to maintain their standards. During the visit we looked at the individual records of the care being given to the people living in the home. They were completed to a good standard and gave the staff good information to meet individual needs. The care plans are reviewed on a regular basis and people living in the home are involved in this process. The case file contains a record where outings and activities are recorded. Some of these were out of date although there was evidence to show that people lead fulfilling lives. There is a complaints procedure in place and the people living in the home confirmed that they knew how to make a complaint. No complaints have been received since the last inspection. Three people living in the home have part time jobs which they enjoy. People enjoy a wide range of activities and are supported to access facilities in the local community. A car is available to escort people to venues of their choice. Recent outings have included trips to Tynemouth, Amble, Newbiggin by the Sea, Warkworth and other local places of interest. Some people like to visit the shops in Ashington Town Centre. They also visit cafes, pubs and clubs on a regular basis. The staff monitor peoples health needs and prompt referrals are made to relevant health care professionals when necessary. The premises were clean, comfortable and pleasantly decorated. People living in the home have personalised their bedrooms with their personal effects. Since the last inspection two large screen televisions have been provided. Also new flooring and curtains have been provided in the communal areas and the paintwork has been renewed. A senior manager or the manager from another home run by the Trust visits the home each month to ensure that standards are maintained. Regular meetings are held in the home and the minutes are recorded. People living in the home confirmed that they attended these meetings and were able to express their opinions on the day to day running of the home.
