What the care home does well

There were three staff on duty on the day of the visit. Staff were warm and welcoming and there was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere between people living and working at the home. We received eleven surveys from people living at The Avenue. Comments within these include, "Its clean and friendly, the staff support and help me. The food is good and the staff let me live as I want to live". "Everything is good", "The staff support me and keep me safe", "They look after us" and "We get good food". Comments from staff in surveys include, "We provide a lovely homely atmosphere for residents and staff", "We care for the long term mentally ill", "We meet the needs of the residents", "Staff are kept up to date with all aspects of care, we provide a friendly and homely environment", "We provide the highest level of care to residents, thus promoting best quality of life, embracing all their rights", " A homely atmosphere, which caters for individual needs" and "We provide a caring and therapeutic environment for residents and a supportive one for staff". We looked at one person`s care plan, it contained detailed information which demonstrated how the home would meet the person`s individual needs. There was evidence that showed that people were involved with their care plan (where they wanted to be or were able). Care plans include risk assessments which show how the home support people to take risks in as safe a way as possible. A tour of the home was taken. Bedrooms are individually furnished and decorated to make them more homely. There is a shared dining area, conservatory and smokers lounge. Two of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities. Medication administration records were looked at. All medication is administered by a qualified nurse. Each medication record has a picture of the individual service user and a list of all medication including any side effects which may occur. Any hand written entries on medication records are now double signed, following the recommendation made in the previous inspection report for the home. Staff said that people had lots of opportunities to participate in social activities and that this included trips out and holidays. One of the people living at the home said he was due to go on holiday and was looking forward to this.

What the care home could do better:

Surveys from people living at the home suggested the following as improvements, "More day trips and outings". Surveys from staff suggest, "We could do with increased funding to improve the residents environment", "Outdoor activities are limited due to space", "Provide better facilities for staff", "Continue to maintain the high level of care", "With increased funding improve the residents environment" and "more funding is needed and more excursions and activities". The garden area contained a number of overflowing ashtrays and cigarette ends on the floor. This should be kept clean. There is no designated lounge at the home, although there is a small seated area in the conservatory and a smoking room. Consideration should be given to providing additional lounge space as the previous lounge area is being used as a bedroom.
