Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: This inspection was carried out by a pharmacist inspector. We did not check whether any previous requirements not related to medicines had been met. We watched medicines being given to some people after lunch and saw that this was done in a friendly and safe manner. We found that the administration of medicines was accurately recorded on medicine charts. We talked to one person who looks after and uses her inhalers without help from members of staff. This person showed us that she had nowhere in her room to lock her medicines. She told us how often she used her inhalers; however there were no detailed instructions on the pharmacy label of one inhaler. We saw that the ability of this person to take charge of her medicines had been assessed by staff and written in the care plan. We noticed that creams were sometimes left in a persons room, in a bathroom or on top of the medicine trolley. Some of these creams were only available on prescription. Other medicines were safely stored. We checked the amounts of some of the controlled drugs being used in the home. We found that controlled drugs are legally stored and accurately recorded. The manager told us that she has arranged for all nurses to attend refresher training about medicines. An up to date reference book on medicines is available for staff use.
