Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 8 0 4 0 8 2 0 0 9 Brief description of the care home Set in its own grounds, there is parking provided to the front and side of the home and a large walled garden area at the back, accessible to people living at the home. The home is registered to Carestream Limited although is currently in the hands of the receivers and is being run by an administration company called Vantis. The home provides a service for up to thirty-two older people. In relation to the accommodation, there are two main lounges and a good size dining area. In addition, there is a large conservatory at the back of the home which people can use at their leisure. All the bedrooms are single and there are good toilet, bathing and washing facilities. There is a pleasant reception area. Outside, there is good access to the home at the front and back. Ramps are in place. Inside, there is access to the first floor by means of two stair lifts. The home is generally spacious. The provider makes information about the service available to enquirers when initial enquiries are made, and a copy of the Service User Guide, on admission to the home. This Random Inspection visit started at 09.30 and ended at 12.30. This short visit looked specifically at the outstanding requirements made following the previous inspection. During the visit there was the opportunity to meet nearly all of the people living in the home, the acting manager, care staff, domestics, cook and one person visiting the home. Some peoples records were seen and included pre admission assessments, care plans, risk assessments, reviews, daily, medical and financial records. Some staff records were seen and included application forms, references, police and POVA (Protection of Vulnerable Adults List) checks and training records. Other information considered include the returned Care Quality Commission Have Your Say surveys from people living in the home and from those caring for them. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment sent in by the service providers and the Wakefield Local Authority Contract Monitoring Report were also seen. This was a very positive visit and a number of improvements were noted. The inspector would like to take the opportunity to thank the people living in the home, Acting Manager and staff team for their hospitality and cooperation throughout the visit. What the care home does well:
To make sure the home can meet peoples personal and health care needs these are now assessed before coming to live in the home. The assessments are very comprehensive and include peoples choices , preferences , likes and dislikes. People care needs are set out in a plan of care showing staff what they must do to meet peoples personal care and support needs. To make sure peoples needs are met the care plans and risk assessments are looked at regularly and amended if need be to reflect peoples changing care needs, choices and preferences. Records show there are now agreed risk assessments for people using bed rails telling staff what they must do to keep people safe. People are protected by the way staff are recruited and selected as records show references, police and POVA (Protection of Vulnerable Adults List) checks are taken up before they are employed. Peoples needs are met by staff that are trained and whos work is supervised. Peoples Health , Safety and Well-being is promoted and protected as records show they have Moving and Handling, First Aid,Food Hygiene,Infection Control and Health and Safety training. The Acting Manager said that all the radiators now have been covered to protect people living in the home and to make sure people dont burn themselves. The maintenance records show that the hot water outlets around the home are now tested regularly to make sure they are not to hot for people to use.
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 To make sure people remain safe the records now show the fire alarms are now serviced and tested regularly. People are protected from any kind of abuse as there is a Safeguarding Policy and Procedure for staff to follow that includes Wakefield Local Authority Safeguarding Protocols. To further protect people records show all staff receive Safeguarding training and update training in how to report any kind of allegation of abuse. The returned Have Your Say surveys show people living in the home are happy with the quality of the care and support provided. One person living in the home said Its lovely and the staff are very caring. Another said the meals are very good. Everyone was observed to be relaxing in the lounges where there was a quiet, relaxed environment. One visitor to the home said There is a lovely environment, that has improved since the appointment of the new manager. People appear to be relaxed and happy. The Acting Manager said they have an application pending with the Care Quality Commission to become the Registered Manager. A tour of the home found it to be well decorated and well maintained it was also noted that cleanliness in the home is maintained to a very high standard. The housekeeper and Domestic staff are to be commended for maintaining such good standards of cleanliness for people living in the home. The report following a visit Wakefield Local Authority Contracts Monitoring Officers shows many improvements to the way the home runs and in particular the Assessments, Risk Assessments and maintenance checks. One person living in the home said they have never looked back since moving in to Haven Lodge, it is a good home with wonderful caring staff.
