The home has been operating since 1993 and is registered under the Care Standards Act 2000 to provide care for up to twenty-four elderly frail people, twelve elderly mentally infirm people and eleven elderly people with high physical dependency needs. All bedrooms have en-suite toilets and washbasins and have letterboxes in their doors. All rooms are fitted with call alarms. The upstairs unit has a dining room

Each downstairs unit has its own lounge/diner with a small kitchenette to allow staff and residents to make drinks though main meals are provided from the homes kitchen. Each unit also has a quiet lounge. Residents are provided with a choice of assisted baths or showers. The home has a main kitchen and well-equipped laundry to meet peoples needs. A hairdressing room is also available. The home has attractive large garden areas, and ample car parking facilities. It is located in a convenient position with local shops, services and recreational facilities being in easy walking distance and is close to bus routes. We carried out an unannounced visit to the service between the hours of 10am and 12. Prior to carrying out the visit we received an annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) which provides us with statistical information about the service and includes any developments and future plans for improvement. We also received a number of surveys from people living and working at the home. We looked at some of the care records and had a tour of the home. We looked at systems to store medication. We also looked at any requirements or recommendations made in the previous key inspection. All of these had been met. What the care home does well:
We received ten surveys from people living at the home, comments within these include, Good activities and social evenings, They keep the home spotlessly clean, including my own room, gives every help, even with private or personal problems. The staff are always cheery and considerate, The girls are all lovely, they look after everyone, the home is very comfortable, Everything is good, the food is great and there are staff that you can talk to, The general care here is good, The staff are lovely and helpful, I have nothing to complain about, I am very happy here at Kirkley Lodge and I have settled well and am very happy. I enjoy living here. We received ten surveys from people working at the home, comments within these include, We provide first class care for the elderly, We are offered good training and support to do the job well, We receive training and up to date information. The home is clean and tidy and has a welcoming atmosphere. The staff and management are helpful and I love working here. I feel that people living here are well cared for and reflect their individual, unique needs, Kirkley Lodge is a happy place to work, the home is well run and people are well cared for. Staff are well supported, Staff are well trained and kept up to date with any changes, The home provides good training for staff and good activities for residents, I love the work and the atmosphere here at Kirkley lodge, there is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and we provide a variety of entertainment and activity and Our standards of care are great, we have good food and cater for all dietary needs. We have a variety of inside activities which includes crafts, baking etc. We looked at records, these included care records for three of the people accommodated. They contained detailed information about the way in which peoples care needs would be met and there was clear evidence that people living at the home and their relatives (where appropriate) were also involved in this process. We had a look around the home, it is well furnished and decorated throughout. There is lots of communal space, including quiet lounges on each of the three units and the home has made clear efforts to make the environment stimulating through the use of themed corridors which is positive. The home has a hairdressing salon, a bar in the upstairs lounge and a large enclosed garden area which also has a sensory garden for people to enjoy. Bedrooms are individually furnished and decorated. A range of activities take place and a music therapist was providing a session to some of
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 the people during the visit. There are lots of photos available of different activities taking place and everyone working at the home gets involved with these. The home now has a designated treatment room to store medication. Each of the units has its own medication trolley and there are good systems in place to order, store, administer and record all medication. Audits of stock are carried out regularly. The inspection was very positive and the home continues to provide excellent standards of care and support to those living there.
