The home was warm clean and free from offensive odours on the day of the inspection and provided a pleasant atmosphere for people who used the service. The registered manager said she and BUPA as a corporation were looking at training for staff to help provide a better service.

What the care home could do better:

The registered manager should look at different systems such as bank staff to ensure the home has sufficient staff to meet the needs of people who use the service. The registered manager should ensure staffing is increased where the dependency of people who use the service is such that staff are under pressure to meet the needs of all.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This unannounced random inspection was conducted due to several concerns raised by various professionals and specifically looked at staff numbers, staff training, cleanliness and free from offensive odours. At 7:30am 6 people who used the service had been got out of bed by night staff. The number rose to 8 by 8am. Two members of staff said that three people who were up had done this by themselves. Both staff said nobody had got up who did not want to. Times of getting up were recorded in plans of care and the quality consultant who was supporting the home to improve said she would look into this as part of her role. Both members of the night staff said that one person who was cared for on a 1-1 basis during the day had caused staff to be diverted from their tasks during the last few nights. Staff appeared to be concerned that although they worked hard they were rushed to complete plans of care or meet the needs of others when this occurred. Staff were varied in their views to staff training. Some staff felt they received sufficient training and others thought they may benefit from specific training such as for management. The registered manager said a lack of training had been an issue under the previous manager and highlighted her plans which should ensure there is a well trained staff group to meet the needs of people who used the service. One trained nurse said On the day of the inspection one unit was a member of staff short. Staff confirmed that the situation had improved over the last week. Both of the other units said there was sufficient staff unless somebody was moved from one unit to another. The registered manager confirmed staff were transferred from one unit to another and she was recruiting more staff to try to run at a slightly higher level (15 ) to cover for sickness and absenteeism.
