We visited this home because concerns regarding the administration of medication had been raised at our last visit. This visit was made by a specialist pharmacist inspector and was unannounced- this meant that no-one knew we were going. We spoke with the proposed manager at length and we also looked at medication storage, records and training records. Overall we found that the proposed manager had made significant improvements to the way medication was to be handled, administered, stored and recorded within the service. We found that medicines were stored securely and only authorised staff had access to them. This helped to ensure they were not mishandled or misused. The proposed manager had completed a full and effective audit (check) of the medication service offered at Primrose Villas. This had lead to major changes being made. Having effective audits enables areas of weakness to be identified and improvements made. A new medication system was to be implemented the week after the visit and all staff authorised to handle medicines had received both medication and systems training before the new arrangements were put into place. The manager told us that plans were in place for all staff to have their competence in handling, administering and recording medicines assessed before being allowed to deal with medication unsupervised. Having well trained staff helps to reduce the risk of mistakes being made. We found that the home had systems in place to enable people to look after their own medicines. We discussed how risk assessments and care plans could be further developed to ensure that people receive the support they need to manage their medication safely.
