What the care home does well

We received a total of fourteen completed surveys and all of the comments were extremely positive. The AQAA told us the home has a very detailed brochure about the service that people can pick up from the home. People are welcome to call, have a look round and talk to staff and people already living there. In the surveys everyone confirmed that they received sufficient information about the service before moving in and everyone said they had a contract. Everyone is assessed before any decision is made about moving in, this is to make sure that each persons care and support needs can be met. Everyone living at the home has a comprehensive care plan which tells staff what action they must take to make sure people`s needs are met. The care plans are reviewed every month and altered if there are any changes in individual needs. People living at the home and their relatives are consulted about the plans regularly; they are asked if they are satisfied with the care provided and whether it could be improved upon. In the surveys people told us they recieve the care and support they need and they get the medical care they require. In the AQAA the manager said she has received positive comments about the care plans from other professionals such as GPs, hospital consultants and staff from social services. People told us that the home arranges activities that they can take part in if they want to. In the AQAA the manager said "we listen to all views and opinions of the residents in the home. I hold residents meetings and ask all residents to join in. We discuss the homeenvironment, menus, activities and any other business and we document this for all to read". There is also a newsletter on display in the entrance area for people living at the home and their visitors to read. During our visit, people were reading, watching TV or sitting chatting. The hairdresser was visiting and several people said they look forward to having their hair done. In the surveys everyone said they enjoyed the meals provided. People told us they are consulted about what is on the menu, they said there is plenty of choice and "the cooks pretty good". The home has been awarded five stars by environmental health for safe food management and the standard of the kitchen. This is the highest award possible. The complaints procedure is on display and details are included in the information that is given to people about the home. In the surveys, people told us they know how to make a formal complaint, everyone said they have someone they can talk to if they not happy. All of the staff have received training and know how to safeguard people in their care. People told us the home is always kept fresh and clean. We looked round some of the bedrooms and the communal areas during the visit and found this to be the case. When we visited, work had just started to upgrade twelve of the bedrooms. En suite facilities are being installed and then the rooms will be redecorated. This will be a big improvement in the facilities at the home. Eventually most of the rooms will be en suite. There has been a big investment in the home over the past year to improve standards. A new fire panel and heating system has been installed. New lighting has been installed outside the building; several carpets have been replaced and there are new beds in all of the bedrooms. There is usually very little staff turnover at the home, the AQAA tells us that only one member of the team has left over the past twelve months. Recruitment procedures are thorough, all staff are checked to make sure they are suitable, before they start work at the home. Training opportunities for staff are good, this ensures that they keep their care practices up to date. The home is well managed by a dedicated, hardworking registered manager who is well respected by the staff team. In the AQAA she said "The home is run in the best interests of my residents ensuring they are safe and well cared for, I always want the very best for all". In the surveys we asked people to tell us what the home does well. These are some of the comments we received: "I find the home lovely, all carers are very helpful and friendlyand Ruth (the manager) is there whenever you need to speak to her". "They provide warmth and friendly professionalism"."I am very happy here, the food is good, they are very caring and help whenever you need it".
