We examined the homes Annual Quality Assurance Assessment, which is the homes self-assessment of its performance to date. We looked at surveys that people who use the service and staff had completed and returned to us with their comments. We considered notifications made by the service and sent to us about significant events. We reviewed the findings of the last key inspection carried out a year ago and the results of the random inspection we did in July 2009. We also considered comments received from a number of agencies who have had involvement with the home, including comments made at a recent safeguarding meeting in September 2009. What has this told us about the service? Sheraton Court continues to do well against most of the National Minimum Standards concerning Older People, in terms of positive outcomes for the people who use the service. People who use the service and their representatives say that they are happy living at Sheraton Court. Typical comments received include: Excellent care. I cant fault the home. Care is first class. The staff are wonderful, nothing is too much trouble for them. The staff are very helpful and kind and will go out of their way to do anything for you. Staff comments support this view: The home always has a very friendly atmosphere and covers a wide variety of activities for the residents. The home provides a very clean and comfortable environment and also does well with staff training. Im really happy about the home...anything Ive asked for, such as a sling hoist or extra staff, Ive been able to get, so long as I could explain why these things were needed. The home has a good rapport with external health and social care staff. There have been some safeguarding issues that have been examined, including some medication errors. The home has responded very well to such challenges and is trying to work constructively with others to improve and safeguard the people who use its service. The service is well managed and there are good quality assurance systems in place, with support from external senior managers provided by Helen McArdle Care. The home has a good staff team of well trained personnel. Most have qualifications in Care at National Vocational Qualification level 2 or above. There are good staff induction and training programmes organised by the home. The personal care provided is good and the premises are excellent in quality. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The service is progressing well and its Quality Rating continues to be good. It needs to continue to work hard to eliminate medication errors (which it is doing with the help of a pharmacist from the Primary Care Trust). It should also consider developing life story work with the people who use its service. There is no intention to carry out a key inspection of Sheraton Court before October 2011. However, the service will be subject to continuous monitoring and annual review and may receive an inspection at any time.
