This inspection was conducted to consider aspects of the health and personal care provided for people who live at the home, staffing levels and management arrangements at the home. During the visit a sample of case records, including moving and handling risk assessments were looked at. The systems in place to track the treatment and recovery of pressure sores and other wounds were looked at. The medication ordering practices were looked at. The quality of food was discussed. The staffing levels were looked at. Discussions were held with six people who lived at Alistre Lodge and three visitors. The manager and owner were also spoken with. The care plans seen contained brief and minimal information. There was limited information relating to the personal likes and dislikes and social history. One plan had not been updated following a significant change in the persons mobility needs. At the time of the visit one person used the hoist occasionally however the care plan indicated that this was used regularly. There was no risk assessment for this person and the safe use of the hoist. The care plans seen had not been kept under regular review. The information relating to the personal and health care needs of people living at the home is kept in a variety of formats and files. One file seen included details of bathing and weights of people. The weight record was partially completed but not dated. It would be advisable to keep the individuals record of weight on their own care records. The records of treatment of pressure sores, skin tears and wounds was looked at. This was completed regularly and showed that progress was being made to treat pressure sores and wounds successfully. There was evidence that the manager sought further expert guidance if needed, for example the tissue viability nurse had recently assessed a person at the home. The front sheet of the record of treatment gave a quick reference guide to any wounds that needed treatment and the treatment required, this could be improved by including the date on which the treatment began. The procedure in place for ensuring that medication is ordered and supplied to the people at the home was looked at. There is a good system in place which ensures that any medication prescribed outside of the routine cycle of ordering is obtained. The home employs dedicated kitchen staff. The home uses a four week menu cycle. the meals on offer are varied. Special diets are catered for. The staff rotas demonstrated that there were sufficient nursing, care and support staff to meet the needs of the people living at the home. There is a programme of staff training. The training includes Moving and Handling. There were records of training undertaken but these were not dated. Alistre Lodge has sufficient trained nurses, who are able to carry out routine nursing procedures including catheter care. What the care home does well:
