Date of last inspection Brief description of the care home Ashlea Court is located in a quiet residential area, close to all village amenities. The home provides care including nursing for up to 48 residents over the age of 65 and included in that total has five places for persons under the age of 65. The building is of a modern construction; purpose built in 1995 and in January 2002 had a 10 -bed extension registered. Furnishings and fittings are of a high standard. A passenger lift and stairs are provided to access both floors. All bedrooms are for single occupancy Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 8 Brief description of the care home and meet the standard regarding minimum standards, 36 of the bedrooms have ensuite facilities and there is a range of assisted and non- assisted bathing facilities within the home. There are four lounge areas and a tearoom for residents and visitors to use. There are two courtyard areas, one of which is enclosed. Ample car parking spaces are available. Information on the service is made available to prospective and current service users via the statement of purpose, service user guide and inspection report. Documents are made available prior to and following admission, copies are always held in the reception area. The home currently operates a waiting list. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: There was evidence in peoples care records to confirm that their needs are properly and thoroughly assessed prior to being offered a place in the home. Peoples care plans are detailed and outline the level of support that care each person requires in ensuring their health and welfare needs are being met and reviewed. Discussions were held with the manager about how they may like to add more detail about peoples personal preferences within their lifestyles. All people spoken to confirmed their satisfaction with the care and services provided by the home. Comments from individuals and their relatives included The staff are all lovely and kind, Im very pleased with the care and Im very happy here, the staff are wonderful and always have time for us. Discussions with health care professionals during the visit also confirmed their satisfaction with the standards of care at the home and positive communications with the staff group. During the visit, systems for the storage and administration of medications within the home were checked, this showed that safe systems are in place. Discussions with people, observation and checks on records show that people are able to make their own choices about how they spend their time and are offered a range of activities. Many people commented on how much they had enjoyed the activities, entertainment and trips out arranged over Christmas.Mealtimes at the home were observed to be a positive experience and many people told us how much they enjoy the meals and that there is always a good choice. If people have concerns with their care, they or people close to them know how to complain. People spoken with told us that the staff and management are very approachable. The home has not received any complaints since the last inspection,the manager now records all concerns received so there is better evidence that issues have been followed up and addressed. The home continues to provide people with a very good standard of facilities, all areas seen were very clean and well maintained. People told us how comfortable they are at the home which was observed during the visit. There were sufficient numbers of staff on duty at the time of this inspection to meet the needs of the people living in the home. Discussions with staff and evidence from records identify that staffing numbers are regularly reviewed in line with any changes in dependency levels. All staff spoken with said that they now receive regular supervision and regularly meet up with their manager to discuss ways of working, checks of records confirmed this. Staff are well trained and know the people who use the service well so they are able to give them the care and support they need. Checks on staff files show that the recruitment procedures in place promote the protection of people who use the service. People, their relatives, staff and visiting professionals consider that the home is well managed. The management have further developed and embedded the quality assurance programme which better demonstrates how the home provides a quality service and is listening to peoples views and opinions. The homes procedures promote the health, safety and welfare of the people who use Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 and work in the service. Checks of maintenance records show that improvements have been made to the management of hot water temperatures in the home which better protect people who use the service.
