The last key inspection visit for this home was completed 4 February 2009 when a quality rating of excellent was awarded. A quality rating can only be awarded or changed following a key inspection visit. This was an unannounced random inspection visit that took place on 20 July 2010. Two inspectors completed the visit. Before the visit took place we looked at information we had received about the home since the last key inspection visit. This information included notifications sent to us from the service, how the service had dealt with any complaints or concerns raised and information given about changes to the management of the home. Since January 2010 The Care Quality Commission have received two expressions of concern regarding the care provided at the home. During the visit we talked to people who use the service, their relatives and people who work in the service. We observed care practices in the home and looked at documents and records held by the home that related to how peoples needs were being met. We also looked at records relating to the management of the home. We walked around the home to make sure that it was clean, safe and comfortable. At the end of our visit, we told the person in charge about what we had found. Four requirements were made following this visit. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
There was very little evidence of any activities taking place. We were told that this was because the activities coordinator was not working that day. The environment has not been well maintained. In addition to general wear and tear, we found evidence of baths and sinks not having plugs in place and toilet seats were discolored.
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 Bathrooms were being used as storage areas, bins for paper towels were not available in communal toilets and bathrooms and equipment such as hoists and seated weighing scales were left in corridors, lounges and stair wells. We also observed some practices that did not promote good infection control. For example soiled linen not being transported correctly through communal areas and toiletries left in a bathroom. There were also syringes used for feeding, that were left on top of bedside lockers and a lack of bins provided for paper towels. Regulation 37 notifications required by the Care Homes Regulations 2001 had not been sent in to the Care Quality Commission since February 2010. We were not able to access information concerning staff recruitment and training. If you want to know what action the person responsible for this care home is taking following this report, you can contact them using the details set out on page 2.
