What the care home does well The home have made improvements to the appropriate storage of equipment used in the home. This means that communal areas are free from unnecessary clutter. The majority of bathrooms and toilets have bins provided for paper towels to be disposed of appropriately which is part of good infection control practices. The majority of stains on baths and sinks have been removed and bathroom and toilets repairs have been completed. 28 staff have completed training in Infection Control. The manager is aware of the remaining 16 staff who need to complete this training. What the care home could do better: The manager of the home should be able to evidence a planned programme of redecoration and refurbishment taking place within the home. This will ensure that service users live in a home that is well maintained. Linen that is worn and torn should be removed from service and replaced. This will ensure that the home provides service users with good quality linen to use for personal care. The manager should apply to register with the Care Quality Commission as soon as possible. It has some beds registered for people who are physically disabled over the age of 55 years. It has 50 single bedrooms, each equipped with an en suite toilet and wash hand basin. Older people with or without nursing needs may be admitted, depending upon their assessed needs. The home is well situated, close to Peterlee town centre and bus services. It is accessible by people with mobility problems and there are pleasant garden and patio areas for residents to enjoy. The home is well equipped and there are a number of attractive lounges throughout the building. The fees for care and accommodation at this home range between £441.60 - £503 per week. This unannounced random inspection visit took place on 14 September 2010. The purpose of the visit was to look at compliance against the requirements that had been made at a previous inspection visit that had taken place 20 July 2010. Before the visit took place we looked at information we had received about the home since the last inspection visit including an improvement plan that had been sent to us by the provider. During the visit we walked around the building to see what improvements had been made, we looked at staff training records and we spoke to a service user and a relative. At the end of the visit we talked to the manager about what we had observed. No requirements have been made following this visit.
