It is situated in a quiet residential area with views of Portsmouth and the Solent. Most of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities. There are two dining areas, two sitting rooms, a TV lounge and a small library area. The home has a shaft lift that services the three floors on which bedroom accommodation is situated. There are car parking facilities at the home. Current weekly fees range between #540 and #850 exclusive of personal items such as hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers and toiletries. The inspection consisted of a visit to the home for approximately 4 hours. During this time 4 residents care records were looked at and each person was spoken to in private. A residents relative also gave his/her views about the home. Two staff were interviewed about their work at the home and discussions took place with the member of the management team in charge of the home. The cook and the maintenance staff member were also spoken to. A tour of the home took place. Residents receive a good service from the home. At present the home does not have a registered manager, but has appointed someone to run the home who will be applying for registration with the Commission. Care service are required to complete an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). This was returned to the Commission and has been used for this report. What the care home does well:
A copy of the homes Service Users Guide is provided and held in residents bedrooms. Residents individual care plans are of a good standard and include the following: an initial assessment at the point of moving into the home, a residents profile giving details of the persons life history, a barthel assessment of abilities and needs, a daily living needs assessment including communication, mobility, medication, mental health, food and meal times and religious needs. Risk assessments are carried out and recorded and include moving and handling and mobility needs. Assessments of skin condition and nutrition are carried out and recorded. Each person has a care plan and the resident signs to acknowledge the content of the plan. Care plans also include details of the persons interests and how they like to spend their time. A residents relative said that, The care is excellent and the home has a good standard of staff. Residents confirmed their satisfaction with the personal care they receive. The staff are reported by the residents to be helpful and kind. One person said that the staff are attentive, quick to respond to any requests that are made, and that the staff respond quickly when the call point is used to ask for help. Other comments made by residents included the following, I am lucky to be here, and, I am very happy with the home. Staff said that the individual care needs of the residents are met and that the residents have everything they need. The homes records of medication show that staff record a signature each time medication is administered to a resident, and, that medication is administered as prescribed. Residents confirmed that they are able to spend their time as they wish. One person Care Homes for Older People
Page 4 of 9 said that he/she prefers to use his/her room more than the communal sitting areas. Residents bedrooms contain items of personal possession that they have brought to the home and include furniture, pictures, books and a fish tank. The home employs an activities co ordinator and a record is maintained showing the individual activities that each person takes part in. Two residents were seen engaged in craft activities with a member of staff and a number of residents were seen taking part in a quiz hosted by staff. A notice board gives details of the activities programme, which includes reminiscence, board games, manicures, foot massage and a visit by the mobile library. Two of the residents spoken to confirmed that activities are provided. One person said how he/she enjoys playing scrabble, two people said that they have their own newspaper delivered and comment was made that there are occassional outings. One person said that a summer fete was held and that this was enjoyable. Residents made favourable comments about the food. One person said, The food is first class, and another person said the food is very good. Two residents stated that they have their breakfast in their room at an agreed time. A 4 week menu plan was displayed showing varied and nutritious meals. The midday meal on the day of the visit was beef stew with dumplings served with potatoes, brocolli and roast potatoes. Dessert was coconut jam sponge, or, fresh fruit salad, or ice cream and/or cheese and biscuits. Residents confirmed that a choice of food is provided, which was also evidenced by a daily record of when staff ask each person what they would like to eat for lunch and the early evening meal. The cook said that the food is home made and that individual tastes are catered for, such as the type of tea the person prefers. This was also confirmed by the 2 staff spoken to. The midday meal was well presented. Staff were seen helping residents to eat their meal where this is needed. The home was found to be clean and well decorated. Residents and a residents relative commented on the environment saying how much they like it and the home is clean and fresh with an absence of any unpleasant odours. A rota is used to ensure that staff make daily checks that clean towels and face cloths are provided. Staff stated that new lifting aids have recently been provided. The home provides sufficient numbers of staff to meet residents needs. This is based on the comments made by staff and the residents. The home aims to provide the following staffing levels: 8am to 12 noon, 6 staff; 12 noon to 2pm, 7 staff; 2pm to 6pm, 5 staff, and, 6pm to 10 pm 4 staff. Three waking night staff are provided. The staff rota showed that these hours are provided. Additional staff hours are provided for cleaning, cooking, maintenance and activities. Records and discussion with staff confirmed that staff have access to a variety of training courses, including, infection control, National Vocational Qualifications levels 2 and 3 in care, dementia, stoma care, moving and handling, health and safety, medication, dealing with behaviour, abuse awareness, equality and diversity and first aid. Staff confirmed that they receive regular supervision and that appraisals take place. Staff also reported that they work as a cohesive team. Records show that newly appointed staff have an induction based on nationally recognised standards. Staff also confirmed that an induction takes place. The AQAA confirms that monthly visits are made to the home by a member of the company who then completes a report on the home.
