Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found:
In March 2009 we carried out a key inspection of this service. At that time there were three requirements carried forward from the previous inspection which had not been met. The home was given new timescales to meet these requirements. In June 2009 we visited to check if the home was taking action to meet these requirements. We found that the home had met two of the requirements. They had taken appropriate action to make sure the correct recruitment procedures are followed. This has helped to make sure that people using the service are protected. The third requirement related to how the home deals with peoples nutritional needs. In June we found that the home was making good progress in dealing with this and we extended the timescale to 23 July 2009. The purpose of this visit was to check if the home had done enough to make sure peoples nutritional needs are met. This visit was unannounced and was carried out by two inspectors between the hours of 10:00 and 12 noon. During the visit we looked at peoples care records, spoke to people living in the home, staff and management and observed staff as they carried out their duties. At the end of the visit we gave feedback to the manager. We looked at the records of six people identified as being nutritionally at risk. These were the same peoples records that we looked at when we visited in June 2009. We chose these records so that we could see whether or not peoples nutritional status had improved. The manager told us that the home has continued to improve the way peoples nutritional needs are met. She said that everyone who is having their weight monitored weekly had gained weight last week. At the last visit we talked to the home about the format of the food/fluid charts. There is only a small section on the chart where staff can record food or drink given outside set meal times. The home is still using the same type of chart. We saw that staff are using the small section at the bottom of the chart to record food and drink taken by people outside set meal times, however they are not recording the time. This was discussed with the manager. We saw that night staff are recording in the daily notes when people have drinks and/or snacks at night and this is good practice. The food charts we looked at were well completed and they showed when people had been offered food/drink and had refused. The records showed that peoples nutritional risk assessments are up to date. Peoples care plans relating to eating and drinking are up to date. They include clear information for staff on the actions they should take if people continue to lose weight or if people who are at risk are failing to gain weight. The chef told us that a new four weekly menu had been devised and was starting on the day of our visit. The previous menu had not proved popular, he said people told him they would prefer a more traditional menu. Since our last visit in June the home has
Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 purchased new equipment, for example new cutlery, plate guards, plastic trolleys and trays. The chef said this has helped to improve food service. We found that the home has taken appropriate action to make sure that peoples nutritional needs are identified and met. In March 2009 we made a requirement relating to staff training and training records. When we visited in June 2009 the home provided us with information on what they are doing to meet this requirement. We extended the timescale for this requirement to 28 August 2009 and we will look at it in detail at the next inspection.
