The reason for this random inspection was to check to see if the requirements made at the last inspection had been met. On the day of the visit the manager was unavailable so we were assisted by one of the qualified nurses and the maintenance manager. We found that two sluices had been purchased and installed which indicated that the requirement made in respect of this had been met. Some work to clear the paths in the garden and make the area fit for residents to enjoy had been completed and the remaining work is to be completed in the Spring. The recommendation was partially met. One assisted bath had been purchased and installed. Unfortunately that was all that had been done. The bathroom had not been finished to an acceptable standard. The maintenance manager had started work on the walls in order to improve the environment. As the work was not complete there was a danger that residents could harm themselves on the wooden battens. The walls were in a poor state where bathroom fittings had been removed and the state of the bathroom as a whole was not acceptable for residents to enjoy the bathing experience. No other baths have been purchased which means there is still only one usuable bath throughout the home. This is not acceptable in a home of this size as most of the residents prefer a bath to a shower. We requested that one of the bathrooms be locked and remain so as there were open pipes along the wall and the room was totally unsuitable for residents to use. As this was in the EMI unit there was real danger to the residents on that floor. The requirements made in respect of the bathing facilities had not beem met. We made a recommendation that training in dementia care was accessed as soon as possible as the home does not currently employ Registered Mental Nurses on day duty. Having spoken to the manager since the visit we find that no date for such training has been agreed. This recommendation has not been met. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
The main area in which this service could and should improve is in the environmental standards within the home. There is a considerable amount of work to be done to the bathing and washing facilites in order to make this an enjoyable experience for those living in Blackwell Vale. Appropriate staff training should be accessed taking into account the health, personal and
