Choice of Home We looked at the assessments of two people who had recently moved into Brantwood. The registered manager did these assessments before the people were admitted and the content of the assessments included sufficient information for a care plan to be drawn up so that the individual needs of each person would be met. The registered manager also provided evidence that people are given a contract after they are admitted to the home so they know what they can expect in terms of facilities and services and how much this will cost. Although there was some information about the persons background in relation to their family, work and social history this was limited and could be more detailed so that staff can provide person centred care. Health and Personal Care We looked at two care plans. The care plan for a person who was admitted to Brantwood on a permanent basis was detailed and included any identified risks so they could be monitored. The care plan had been reviewed so that changing care needs were recorded and so that staff were informed of any new actions that needed to be taken to ensure that the person received the care they needed. The registered manager told us that the home does not provide a care plan for people admitted for a short break and that sufficient information is obtained during the assessment process to enable appropriate care to be provided. In this instance the home records daily progress notes to indicate care provided and any changes. We looked at how the home was managing medication. Several minor concerns were raised about the recording of one drug whereby the exact doseage was not recorded. This was important as the doseage varied during the week and records needed to demonstrate that the correct dose had been administered on each occasion. The homes medication policy was quite brief and had not been reviewed since 2005 so that the guidance was not up to date. The registered manager had started to keep a record of medication returned to the pharmacy but there was no record after October 2008 that this was happening so that the home could not prove that medication had been returned. The home was not managing controlled drugs in a safe manner so that records might not be correct and there was no audit of how this was being managed. Daily Life and Social Activities We spoke to four people living in the home. Several said that they could stay in their own room if they wished and were given choice in their daily lives about how they spent their day. One person commented that there was not much stimulation. The home no longer has an activity coordinator and staff do some activities with people living in the home if they have sufficient time during their working day. Several activities were detailed on the notice board in one of the lounges. The registered manager said that more able people go for walks in the local community and people are taken to the local shops by car if they wish. The standard of catering at Brantwood is good and on the day of our visit people were offered fish in a variety of ways according to their preferences. The home also keeps a record of peoples dietary Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 preferences so that they are given food they like. The owners are still doing the food preparation themselves but are actively trying to recruit a new cook. The food provided looked appetising and the owners said that they try to use mainly fresh produce so people are given good quality food. Complaints and Protection Brantwood provides appropriate policies and procedures relating to complaints and safeguarding adults so people living in the home know they are protected. The home has not received any complaints in the last 8 months. Environment Brantwood offers a very pleasant, clean and well maintained environment to people living there. Of particular note was the calm, quiet and relaxed atmosphere and the variety of lounges so that people had a choice of where to spend their day. Several minor points regarding the environment were discussed with the owners during the visit. Staffing Staffing levels at Brantwood appeared to be satisfactory during the visit. Both owners take an active part in the running of the home and the registered manager, who is a c0-owner lives on site so is available at all times. This is important at night when there is only one care assistant on duty. Staff working at the home are highly regarded by people living in the home, one person commenting, very good, well looked after and well fed. We looked at the recruitment records of one staff member who had recently started work at the home. All necessary documentation was in place and the registered manager said that the staff member was working under supervision until a full security check had been received from the Criminal Records Bureau. Management Brantwood is well run and this is enhanced by the active involvement of both owners who demonstrate a commitment to high standards of care. They have recently conducted a survey into standards of care and were able to provide evidence that people living in the home are satisfied with the care and facilities provided. For instance one question related to spiritual needs with 14 people stating, I feel my opinions and beliefs are listened to and respected and 16 commenting, treated with dignity and respect by all staff.
