What the care home does well

The manager completes pre admission assessments and service users have the opportunity to visit the home before a decision to live there is made. Information provided on comment cards by service users, relatives, health professionals and discussions at the home show generally there is satisfaction with the service provided. Two relatives comments received were positive and stated staff to be "friendly conscientious and caring". The meal served at lunchtime on the day of the visit was cooked and served to a good standard, service users` were assisted appropriately and the interaction in the dining room was good. A service user said they "had some good meals". The home was clean and tidy providing a pleasant environment for service users` to live in. The home is cleaned and decorated to a good standard and no unpleasant odours were evident.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Action had been taken to comply with eleven of the twelve requirements made at the visit of 9 May 2006 and the medication requirements made by the Pharmacy Inspector at their 16 June 2006 visit. There is marked improvement completing and implementing risk assessments and care planning, although some further development is needed to ensure all needs are appropriately met. Some service users` weights had been checked regularly, and the manager, following the visit, has informed the Commission that new weighing scales are to be obtained to make weighing easier for services users that have difficulty standing. Good progress had been made to address the medication requirements made by the Commission Pharmacist, although three recommendations remain outstanding. A district nurse felt "the service had improved" over the past six months. However, she felt the home did not always respond to her requests promptly e.g. a request to provide individual containers to store service users surgical dressings was made three days prior to the visit but had not been provided. The service users` records seen showed health professionals had visited and accidents had been recorded appropriately. There was an overall improvement seen in the standard of recording. The manager has made some indoor activities available and an improvement has been made in the outings. A Summer Fayre had been held which everyone spoken with said had been successful. The provision of staff training has improved and includes mandatory training, medication, dementia and challenging behaviour training. Records of proposed training were seen and are satisfactory. The manager pursues training and is currently working towards a management qualification.Recruitment procedures had been completed for staff employed since the last visit. The maintenance of the home, and requirements made at the last visit in respect of this, had improved. The manager said she is currently developing a maintenance and development plan
