Conditions of registration: Date of last inspection 17th October 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Number 1 Christchurch Road is a detached older style house in a residential area of Hemel Hempstead offering a service to five people. The accommodation is on two floors and consists of one en-suite bedroom, comfortable sitting room, dining room and kitchen on the ground floor, and four further bedrooms, bathroom, toilet and office on the first floor. There is an additional toilet on the mezzanine landing, and the garage is used as a utility space for laundry and some food storage. There is a small paved garden at the rear of the house, which is tended by staff and service users. The house is close to Hemel Hempstead town centre and public transport is accessible nearby. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This inspection was carried out in the evening of the 14th January 2006. All the service users were present and the inspector spoke with all of them. They were well presented and told the inspector that they were happy in Christchurch Road. One of the service users had died since the last inspection leaving five service users living there at the moment. The environment was clean and fresh all service users have personalised their rooms. One service user was making tea and invited the inspector to join her. There have been no other changes since the last inspection. All standards not inspected at this inspection are available in the report dated 17th October 2005. No requirements were left at this inspection. Service users are offered a healthy diet and enjoy their meals and mealtimes. The Commission considers Standards 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 12,13,14,15. The service users have opportunities for personal development and where possible participate in the local community. EVIDENCE: Service users spoken with informed the inspector that they participate in the running of the home. Each has a day when they chose the main course for the evening meal. They are fully supported by staff in the daily tasks of living. They have a varied and full life outside the home. The home is within easy access of the town centre. The service users use the local pub and restaurants to eat out regularly. All the service users were seen by the inspector. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The environment was clean and fresh. EVIDENCE: The home was clean, fresh and odour free. All rooms were personalised and homely. The home meets the space requirements of the Care Standards Act 2000. Service users have the facility to lock their rooms. The home has plans to install a new kitchen in the coming financial year. The front door is shabby and in need of paint, the Registered Manager informed the inspector that a new door is on order and is expected to be installed in the very near future.
