Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 6 What we found: This inspection was part of a random programme of inspections to see if medicines were being handled safely. The visit took about two hours and involved inspecting residents medicines and medicine records and talking to the proprietor who manages the home including the medicines. We found that on the whole medicines were handled well, which helps ensure that residents health and wellbeing is protected. We looked at how medicines were stored and found them to be secure in a carrying case in a lockable cupboard. This means that they are safe and unauthorised people cannot get to them. We looked at how medicines were handled. Where possible residents medicines were packed in a nomad box or similar. ( A container that holds seven days medicines, divided into compartments representing the day and time of the day. This means that staff can easily see when each dose of medicine should be given) The other medicines were in the usual bottles and boxes. No problems were found with medicine handling. This means residents health is protected by careful medicine handling. We looked at the records of the audit trail of medicines. Records of giving medicines to residents were correct. There was a book to record medicines received. Some of these records were not made in full. (The medicine received, quantity, date of receipt and the initial of the staff receiving them.) There were no detailed records of medicines received in the nomads. When the prescription details changed or an item was received with no printed sheet, staff hand write the record. These were not signed and dated and changes were not explained. It was easy to account for the medicines in the nomads. It was not possible to connect the amounts of medicines in conventional containers to the records. It was agreed that the above changes would be implemented by the following day when the new supplies arrive and that the record sheet will be marked when a new conventional container is opened. This is important as clear, correct mediciation records show that residents health is protected by giving medicines correctly and accounting for every dose.
