What the care home does well

A check of several weeks duty rotas showed that there was enough staff on duty throughout the day and night to care for the residents. We did see however that recently there had been a lot of agency care staff used. We were told that this was due to the fact that some of the regular staff at the home were either off sick or on annual leave. We were informed by the manager that they had recently recruited some more care staff to work permanently at the home. We saw that lots of training has been provided for the staff and further training has been planned for the very near future. We concentrated mainly on looking at the training for moving and handling and for delivering 1st Aid. We found that the majority of staff had undertaken training in both these subjects, however some staff needed refresher training in moving and handling and some staff needed the initial training in 1st Aid. The staff that we spoke to told us that the training they received was very good and that it enabled them to do their jobs safely. They told us that they felt they were very well supported by the manager and other senior staff. They told us that the senior nurses are always there to offer advice and that they worked alongside them regularly. The care plans were very detailed and gave clear instruction and guidance on how the care needs of the residents were to be met.

What the care home could do better:

Management need to make sure that 1st Aid training is undertaken for all care staff.

This information was received on the 30th September 2009. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We (The Care Quality Commission) undertook a visit to the home because of recent concerns that had been identified in relation to the safeguarding and protection of people living at the home. During a recent meeting with the Bolton Social Services Adult Protection Team it was decided that we would visit the home to look at how many nursing and care staff were rostered to be on duty on each of the units. This is to make sure that there are enough staff on duty at any one time to meet the needs of the residents. We also looked at what training and supervision the nursing and care staff had received and we spoke to 2 qualified nurses and 3 care staff to ask for their views on the training they had received and whether they felt they were properly supervised and supported. We also looked at some of the residents care plans to see if they contained enough information about them. A care plan details the individual care and support needs that a resident may have and also shows how those needs are to be met by the staff.
