What the care home does well
Residents were given useful information about the home, some of which was in a form that they could understand, for example pictures were used. Before the residents went to live in the home written information about them, and what care and support they needed, was obtained. This helped to make sure that Heyhead House was the right place to live and that staff understood the residents. The residents` care and support was well planned and made sure that they were well looked after, and had interesting and enjoyable things to do. Most residents went to college during the week and enjoyed hobbies and free time at the weekend. Some residents were able to visit their families at the weekends and were encouraged by the staff to do so. Residents could also choose some of the things they wanted to do and things that happened in the home. There was good written information about the residents, and what support they needed and what they liked to do. The residents and staff appeared to get on well and the residents said that staff were "nice" and "looked after them well". One said she "got on well" with her key worker. There was a friendly atmosphere in the home. The residents` health was well looked after and there were different ways of making sure that they had all the health care they needed. Some medication practices were safe and made sure that the residents` took the right medication. Systems and policies and procedures were in place to ensure residents were listened to and protected from harm. The residents knew who to speak to if they were unhappy about anything in the home and there were some pictures on the notice board to help them know what to do. The home was a modern, pleasant, bright and comfortable home for the residents. The home was clean and fresh.
What has improved since the last inspection?
What the care home could do better:
The written information about the care and support residents need should include emotional needs and also useful information if residents begin to become confused and forgetful. Some parts of medication could be made safer, for example staff checking the prescriptions before they go to the pharmacist so that mistakes can be avoided. The house could be further improved and a plastic strip over the carpet in a corridor must be made safe. The damage done to some walls and door frames by, a wheelchair, should be repaired. The way staff are chosen to work in the home must be improved to make sure that only suitable people are allowed to work in the home. The home must follow the legal procedures and this must be done immediately. Some staff should have training in first aid, and also staff would benefit from having training about people with learning disabilities.
