What the care home does well

There was a good up to date plan of care to keep staff informed of the care staff should give to each person who used the service. Staff had undertaken safeguarding training to help protect people who used the service. The improvement in privacy helped protect the dignity of people who used the service. There were sufficient numbers of well trained staff to meet the needs of people who used the service. There was a suitably qualified and experienced manager employed at the care home which meets the requirements of the CQC.

What the care home could do better:

The registered manager must develop a good quality assurance system, which should include sending out questionnaires to relatives, stakeholders and people who use the service to gain and respond to their views of the care home.

Plans of care were very good and contained all the information required for staff to meet the needs of people who used the service. Plans of care had been reviewed on a monthly basis which showed the care service was up to date with each person needs. Staff said they had undertaken safeguarding training. The training matrix and confirmation given by the registered manager showed all staff had undertaken training to be aware of safeguarding concerns. A visit was made to bedrooms to check privacy screens had been fitted around toilets. There were screens fitted and one lady thought the toilet and screen was the bees knees. More staff had been employed since the last key unannounced inspection. This included night staff to provide better cover. Staff had undertaken training in infection control, food hygiene, moving and handling, first aid, dementia, safeguarding, palliative care, HIV, diabetes, violence and aggression and medication. The training matrix demonstrated most staff had completed the training and helped improve their competence and knowledge. The manager had been registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The manager held regular formal meetings with staff and people who used the service to try to provide a better service. The registered manager said she had a open door policy for relatives, staff and service users to provide good communications. The registered manager said she had just commenced sending out questionnaires to people who used the service to demonstrate this was a responsive care home.
