This inspection was carried out on 19th December 2005.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

The home provides a warm, welcoming place for people to stay. Comfortable and supportive chairs in the lounge make for a homely but practical solution to providing for everyone`s needs. Settees in the conservatories offer a different environment and seating." It makes a change sitting here and watching what`s happening up the lane", said one resident. Bedrooms are generally quite large and airy, with whatever personal belongings people wish to bring. The gardens are well maintained and attractive, overlooking the lane at the front, and a small private space at the back of the home, both being pleasant places for residents to sit in the good weather. Maintenance issues are dealt with as soon as possible. Staff are enthusiastic and work well together. "It`s a nice place to work", said one staff member, "We all get on well"

The staff continue to provide a good standard of care to the people resident there.

What the care home could do better:

The manager is aware that there is always room for improvement, and is continually looking at ways forward to further improve the quality of life for the residents.

There are attractive garden areas at the front and rear of the home where residents can enjoy sitting in the better weather. Car parking is available either at the side of the home, or in the road alongside the home. The home provides personal care for older people, and is equipped to suit the needs of its residents. For example, there is a stair lift to the upper floor, grab rails, raised toilet seats and ramps for easy access. All of the rooms are single rooms, and toilets and bathrooms are conveniently situated. There is sufficient communal space, with a large lounge/dining room and conservatories at the front and rear of the home. Staffing is provided over 24 hours, every day of the year. The inspection took place over 2 and a half hours, and was one of the two inspections which must be made each year. Additional inspections may be made if necessary. The inspection was unannounced, in that the owners were not aware that the inspection was to take place. A tour of the home was made, and rooms were inspected at random. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 9 The medication at this home is well managed, promoting good health EVIDENCE: All medication is stored securely in a dedicated trolley, which is attached to the wall in the dining room. Medication records were available for all residents, and were seen to be clear and up to date, with photographs of residents identifying these records further. The manager stated that she regularly monitors the records to ensure they are complete, and medication issues are regularly on the agenda at staff meetings. All staff have had medication awareness training, and are due to have refresher training. Constant professional guidance is also present as the manager is a qualified nurse. Patient information leaflets are kept for staff information on each individual’s medication, and there is regular liaison with the local pharmacist. Risk assessments are carried out, and waivers signed, by any resident wishing to take charge of taking their own medication, which they then keep in a secure place in their own room. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 19 and 26 The standard of the environment in this home is good, with the aim to constantly improve it. It provides residents with an attractive and homely place to live. EVIDENCE: The front and rear garden areas are well maintained, with seating in both places for residents to spend their time in good weather. One resident was feeding visiting ducks in the front garden, while another watched from the warmth of the front conservatory. A small rear conservatory is a pleasant place to sit, and gives another alternative for visitors to see their relatives in. The environment is homely, comfortable and warm, with a large lounge dining area having comfortable seating alongside nicely set tables and chairs, with matching table linen. All of the individual rooms seen held the personal possessions of the resident staying there, with photographs, favourite pictures and ornaments, and small Kepplegate House DS0000055105.V273081.R01.S.doc Version 5.0 Page 13 pieces of personal furniture where possible. “ It’s lovely. I like my room. It’s cosy”, commented a resident. The manager stated that she had identified that some of the décor was starting to look a little tired in some of the rooms. She stated that the aim was to try and get these rooms refreshed, with as little disturbance to the residents as possible. One of the rooms has parquet flooring, with which the resident is quite happy, along with the ‘safe’ rugs placed on it, which are made so as not to slip. The manager confirmed that any new resident in that room would have the choice of a carpet if they wished. The home was clean, bright and fresh smelling at the time of the visit. Any maintenance noted as required by staff during their daily work, is recorded on a maintenance record, and dealt with by the owners as soon as possible. The laundry area is away from the kitchen and dining area, and was clean and tidy. Staff spoken to were aware of the correct way to work to prevent and control infection.
