What the care home does well

The providers had taken steps to comply with statutory requirement notices and were working to-wards improvement.

What the care home could do better:

There was a strong unpleasant odour in the reception area, this must be eradicated in order to provide a comfortable environment for people living at Langdale House. Care plans must be in place to instruct staff on the actions they must take to meet peoples individual needs and protect them form harm. We extended the date for compliance with this requirment to the 2nd of October 2009 and this will be checked through our inspection processes. A clear audit trail of all transactions for peoples personal money must be maintained, this is to minimize the risk of financial abuse. Peoples personal money must not be held in the providers business bank accounts. A suitable manager must be appointed with the necessary skills and experience to provide a clear sense of leadership and direction for staff and ensure the service is run in the best interests of people living there.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 14 What we found: We visited the home on the 15th of September 2009 to check compliance with Statutory Requirement notices we served regarding care planning and safeguarding people from harm. We looked at care records and staff training records. We spoke with staff and with the registered providers and observed care practices. The provider told us that they had only partially complied with the statutory requirement notice regarding care plans. None of the care plans were fully completed and six out of fifteen care plans had very little information in them. A staff training and development programme was in place. Since the last inspection, the majority of staff had received training regarding moving and handling, safeguarding vulnerable adults and caring for people with dementia. Staff spoken with were able to confirm they had received this training and could demonstrate an awareness and understanding within these areas. We looked at the way the providers manage peoples own personal money and found that there was not a clear audit trail of all transactions.
