What the care home does well

Since the last inspection, staff spoken with were better informed about the needs of people living at the home and knew about their mobility needs and the equipment they should use to promote safety. However, staff continued to require constant supervision to ensure that safe procedures were followed.

What the care home could do better:

Care plans had not been formulated for each individual person living at the home, therefore staff did not have the information they required to meet peoples needs or to keep them safe and had to rely on the verbal instruction of the management team. Where there are gaps in employment history, the providers must explore this with the employee and obtain a satisfactory explanation. Where possible, references should be obtained from the person or organization that last employed the staff member rather than from a less senior person that they worked with. References should contain an official stamp or be verified for authenticity, this is to ensure that up to date information is provided about the employee to enable the provider to assess their suitability. Staffing rosters were formulated in the short term, this meant that staff at the home were given very short notice about who would be covering shifts and staff were brought in from the providers other home`s, this was not ideal considering the complex needs of many of the people living at Langdale house. There was also only a limited number ofstaff who had been assessed as competent to manage peoples medication, this also had implications for staffing each shift to ensure that there was at least one person on each shift who was competent to manage medication safely.

Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We visited the service on the 30th of July and the 4th of July to assess risk to people living the home. On the second visit on the 4th of July a pharmacy inspector also undertook an inspection for which a separate report was written. We spoke with the management consultant who was in charge of the home at the time of this inspection and to staff members regarding peoples needs and the care they received, we also looked at staff employment records. Staff spoken with were able to demonstrate a good awareness of peoples needs and the actions they needed to take to meet these needs and to promote peoples safety. Staff spoken with had recently received updated training in moving and handling, care of people with dementia and safeguarding people from abuse. Staff members spoken with told us they had found this training useful for them and for the people living at the home. We looked at staff employment records and found that the relevant checks had been carried out such as Criminal Records Bureau checks, this is to ensure that people working at the home were suitable to do so. At least two written references had been obtained for all staff that we checked. We looked at staffing rosters and spoke with the management consultant about staffing numbers. Staffing levels were only just sufficient to meet peoples needs, the providers were having to use staff from their other homes to cover shifts.
