This inspection was carried out on 7th November 2005.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

Langlea House is a small, friendly, well managed, well resourced, comfortable and relaxed home. Service users have confidence in the staff and were very happy with the care and support they receive. The range and frequency of both group and individual activities that are provided in the home is commendable. Service users are kept both physically and mentally active and are generally well stimulated. There are lots of activities and entertainment planned for the lead up to Christmas. Residents can also go Christmas shopping if they want to, with a member of staff. The owners continue to make improvements to the building and facilities. Since the last inspection the kitchen has been totally refurbished and a new extension has been built. The new visitors/hairdressing room is very popular with residents. There are tea/coffee making facilities in this room and they can entertain their visitors in private. The registered manager is well organized and makes sure that residents are living in a safe and comfortable home. All of the checks and servicing of equipment are up to date and any necessary repairs are quickly sorted out. Residents are involved in the running of the home. There are regular residents meetings where people are able to talk about anything they think would make the home better and give their ideas for trips out, meals, entertainment etc.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The kitchen has been totally refurbished and a new extension has been built to create a visitors/hairdressing room, new laundry and office.

What the care home could do better:

The owners and manager continue to develop the service they offer. The home is running well and residents are very happy with the service they receive. There is nothing from this inspection visit identified that the home could do better.

The local shops, amenities and pubs are within walking distance. There are good public transport links to Halifax town centre. Langlea House is a care home for older people. It was a former private residence, which has been adapted and extended to provide accommodation for 14 older people. The building is well maintained, pleasantly decorated and comfortably furnished. There is one lounge, dining room and conservatory on the ground floor. The conservatory is the designated smoking area for residents. An extension to the home has been completed recently. There is now a visitors/hairdressing room, office and laundry on the ground floor. There are eight single bedrooms and three double bedrooms all of which have en suite toilet facilities. Bedrooms are well decorated and furnished to a good standard. There is a shower room on the ground floor and an assisted bathroom on the first floor. This inspection was unannounced and took place over 3 hours. Five residents, three relatives and two members of staff were spoken to. A full inspection of the building was made and records relating to the management of the home were inspected. . JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 & 26 Residents live in a clean, safe, comfortable, well maintained home. EVIDENCE: Langlea House is situated in Hipperholme, behind the Jet garage on Denholmegate Road. The shops and local facilities are on the main Halifax / Leeds Road which is approximately ½ mile away. There is a car park at the front of the building, which has recently been tarmaced. The gardens are attractive and the patio is well used by service users and their relatives in fine weather. There is ramped access to the side of the building. The home has a lounge, dining room and conservatory. The conservatory is the designated smoking area. These rooms are well furnished, comfortable and clean. There are two televisions, a music system and a video in these rooms for service users entertainment. There is ramped access from the lounge to the patio area outside. Langlea House DS0000039476.V263202.R01.S.doc Version 5.0 Page 13 There are eleven bedrooms all of which have en suite facilities. There is one toilet in close proximity to the lounge area. There is a shower room on the ground floor and an assisted bathroom on the first floor. There is ramped access to the side of the building. There is a stair lift, which serves the ground and first floor. All of the service users at Langlea are mobile and require little or no assistance from staff. There is an emergency call bell in service users bedrooms and in the bathrooms and toilets. All the bedrooms are carpeted and are well furnished. Service users have brought a variety of possessions, which have made the rooms very personal. All bedroom doors have locks fitted to which service users hold their own keys. There is also lockable drawer space in the bedrooms. The home was very clean and there were no unpleasant odours. The home has policies and procedures in place relating to infection control. The manager and deputy manager attend monthly infection control courses. The laundry has been moved from the garage into the new extension. It is equipped with a washing machine and tumble drier. Service users are supported and protected by the home’s recruitment policy and practices. Staff are trained and competent to do their jobs. Service users live in a home which is run and managed by a person who is fit to be in charge, of good character and able to discharge his or her responsibilities fully. Service users benefit from the ethos, leadership and management approach of the home. The home is run in the best interests of service users. Service users are safeguarded by the accounting and financial procedures of the home. Service users’ financial interests are safeguarded. Staff are appropriately supervised. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s record keeping, policies and procedures. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are promoted and protected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 31, 32, 33, 35, 36, 37 & 38 The home is well managed and run in the best interests of residents. Residents are involved in the running of the home and consulted about their care and support. Practices in the home promote the health, safety and welfare of the residents. EVIDENCE: The registered manager has completed the registered managers award training. In addition to this she keeps herself up to date by attending additional training courses and seminars. Residents are consulted about the running of the home in residents meetings, through the annual quality assurance questionnaires and at the monthly reviews of their care plans. The owner also talks to residents to find out their views as part of their monthly report on the home. Residents and relatives all Langlea House DS0000039476.V263202.R01.S.doc Version 5.0 Page 16 said that if they had any problems they would speak to the manager and wee confident that any issues would be resolved. The manager does hold money on behalf of residents. The records examined were well maintained and accurate. All of the staff receive regular supervision and are appraised every 6 months. If any training needs that are identified during this process a suitable training course is identified. The service users guide gives information about residents accessing the records that are held in the home. There is a policy in place regarding service users seeing the records that are held on them. Records at the home were readily available and well maintained. There is a written Health and Safety policy. Staff receive moving and handling, food hygiene, fire safety, first aid and infection control training. The fire alarms are tested weekly and fire drills/practices are held. Gas safety, electrical installation and portable electrical test records were all seen and were up to date, as were the service records for the bath hoist and starlift.
