Conditions of registration: 1. A maximum of 14 persons in the category DE(E)(Dementia) to be accommodated. 2. A maximum of 40 persons in the OP category in need of nursing care may be accommodated. Date of last inspection 9 February 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Longfield Manor is a care home with nursing providing personal care and accommodation for up to 40 older people and accommodation for 14 service users with dementia. 53 service users are accommodated at this time.It is privately owned by Dr. S. H. Sachedina and Mr. S Boghani. The home was opened in 1998 and is a two-storey building with well-maintained grounds.The home has 46 single bedrooms and 4-shared bedrooms all offering ensuite facilities. There is a passenger lift and comfortable sitting and dining areas, domestic in character. There is an attached day centre, which the service users can access. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This unannounced inspection was carried out on the 6 July 2005. The home was inspected, residents, staff, a GP and visitors were spoken to. The deputy manager was available throughout and the manager was available in the afternoon. Each service user has a written contract/ statement of terms and conditions with the home. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Service users and their representatives know that the home they enter will meet their needs. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 12,13 Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family, friends and representatives and the local community as they wish. EVIDENCE: There is a comprehensive activities programme in place and residents spoken to stated that they were happy with the activities available. Residents stated that they can maintain links with the community and that they can have visitors as they wish. One resident stated that she was very happy and that she goes out every day. Service users’ legal rights are protected. Service users are protected from abuse. The Commission considers Standards 16 and 18 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 16, 18 Residents, relatives and friends are confident that their complaints will be listened to, taken seriously and acted upon. Residents are protected from abuse. EVIDENCE: The complaints procedure was inspected and it specifies how a complaint will be dealt with. The complaints book has details of a complaint, which was ongoing at the last inspection as having achieved a satisfactory outcome. Policies and procedures are in place for the protection of residents from abuse and staff spoken to state how they would deal with a case of suspected abuse. One resident stated that they were treated with love and kindness, thus it is the homes intention to protect residents from abuse. All areas were neat, clean and well maintained. Some fabrics and furnishing have been replaced. The bathroom areas were hygienic and the laundry room is being extended. Residents spoken to stated that the home is comfortable but one resident stated that she has asked more than once to be in a room on her own and that her request has not been met. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) The numbers and skill mix of staff meets residents needs. Staff are trained and competent to do their jobs. 27, 30 EVIDENCE: Staff rota was available for inspection and shows adequate numbers of staff on duty. There is a training programme in place and staff spoken to stated that their training needs are met. The home takes adaptation students and facilitates their entry onto the register held by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Service users’ rights and best interests are safeguarded by the home’s record keeping, policies and procedures. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are promoted and protected. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 31,32,33,38 Residents live in a home which is run and managed by a person who is fit to be in charge, of good character and able to discharge his or her responsibilities fully. Residents benefit from the ethos, leadership and management approach of the home. The home is run in the best interests of service users. Residents are safeguarded by the accounting and financial procedures of the home. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are promoted and protected. A visiting general practitioner stated that he finds the home organised and residents well looked after when he arrives. The health, safety and welfare of service users and staff are ensured by the provision of training in moving and handling, fire safety, first aid and food hygiene. In Care training provide the fire training and other training is provided in house utilising NVQ trainers. The management therefore runs the home with the best interests of the residents in mind.
