The last key inspection of this service was carried out on 16 October 2008. Since then we have received some concerns about the home. This visit was unannounced and done by two inspectors between the hours of 10.20 am and 12.40 pm. During the visit we spoke to people living in the home, visitors, staff and management. We looked at some documents including peoples care plans and the duty rotas and we observed staff as they carried out their duties. People looked well cared for and they told us they are. People told us the staff are kind and friendly. One person said its a nice place, the staff are friendly and we are well looked after. Another person told us that staff cut up her food for her because she finds it difficult to swallow. Peoples care plans have information about how their personal, health and social care needs are to be met. We saw in the records that people or those close to them are involved in planning and reviewing how their needs will be met. Relatives confirmed this and said they are kept well informed by the home. Throughout the morning we saw lots of visitors coming and going. The visitors we spoke to said they are always welcome and said they can and do visit at any time. Most of the people living in the home said there are enough activities. They said they play bingo and have music. One person said it can be a bit boring sometimes, especially in the evening when there is not much to do. People told us the food is good, they said they enjoy it and there is plenty of it. They said they always get a choice of meals. At lunchtime the tables in the dining room were nicely set with place mats and napkins, there were condiments and flowers on every table. People were offered a choice of two hot meals when they sat down. Staff were available to prompt or help people as needed. People told us they also get a choice in the evening, most evenings there is a choice of a hot meal or sandwiches. Some evenings there is a buffet tea. The cook told us that people are offered a cooked breakfast as well as a choice of cereals. The home keeps records of all food served to people. During the visit we discussed meal times. Lunch is served between 12 and 12.30 and the evening meal is served at about 4.30. The lunch time may be a little early, if people are having a late breakfast they may not be ready to eat again so soon. Also, because the evening meal is served early there could be a long gap between this and breakfast for some people. Staff told us the kitchen is open all night if people want something to eat. There were 22 people in the home when we visited. There were 4 staff on duty, one of whom was a senior care assistant. There are usually 4 staff on duty during the day and 2 overnight. Staff told us the manager can always be contacted if she is needed. It was the managers day off but she came in while we were in the home. We discussed the staffing at weekends with her. She told us that the home does not have different staff at the weekend, the same staff work throughout the week on rotation. Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 Staff told us they have recently had training on Moving and Handling, Health and Safety, fire safety, the protection of vulnerable adults and dementia. They said the company provides lots of training for them. We saw that staff were kind and respectful in their interactions with people. It was evident that they are aware of peoples needs, likes and dislikes and try to meet these needs.
