What the care home does well

The records showed that there had been some difficulties in maintaining some staffing levels due to staff sickness and also because two full time staff had also left and so far only one had been replaced. Interviews were planned for the remaining vacancy. Copies of the rotas for the coming months showed how the home would be covered using some staff where needed from another home run by the same Provider. The Inspector was concerned that some staffing levels had been maintained by using management hours but we were subsequently provided with plans for the coming two months which provided additional management cover. The service agreed to continue supplying copies of the homes staffing rotas for the coming months. The records demonstrated that the staff team had worked together well to try and ensure that the majority of community based activities were being supported. However another concern around this is the limited number of drivers in the home, which again means the manager is regularly called upon to perform this task. At the time of the visit several people living in the home were out undertaking activities and there was sufficient staffing in the house to support the remaining people. There was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the house and staff were observed interacting professionally and appropriately with the people living in the home. Regular regulation 26 inspections have been completed and the manager has been receiving supervision and support from the Provider.

What the care home could do better:

The Provider and acting manager need to co-ordinate the management and staffing cover more effectively to ensure there is clarity over what relief cover can be brought in and what cover can be utilized to ensure that the management hours are maintained. The home needs to try and ensure that more drivers are available or that alternate forms of transport are more easily available to the staff and the people living in the home.
