We looked at all the information we have received, or asked for, since the last Annual Service Review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was detailed and gave us all the information we asked for. We were informed in March 2009 that the home would be closed for several months due to substantial upgrading and refurbishment of the building. According to the AQAA the reason for the work is to provide enhanced facilities that better meet the needs of the people using the service, particularly those with more complex physical needs. The service has temporarily moved to the Hyndburn short break centre based at 98/100 Gloucester Avenue, Accrington. This is to ensure continuity of services to individuals and their families whilst the improvements take place. We have been told the people using the service and their families have been fully informed about the situation and arrangements have been made to support people at other short break centres operated by Lancashire County Council. When the service reopens the manager has informed us in the AQAA, that a more flexible booking system will be introduced, which will provide a more equitable and flexible service to people using the service and their families. People will be supported by a well trained staff team, who will be familiar with their needs and preferences. To achieve this staff will have some sessions rostered to work in the local day centre. They will also liase with other agencies and where appropriate will spend time going into peoples homes to work with the families. The manager works well with us and has let us know about how the improvements to the premises are progressing. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor information received about the service and will carry out an inspection when required. We can inspect a service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
