What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well the outcomes are being met for the people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service for example the number of staff trained. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the home, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. We also looked at the previous key inspection report. Comments that were received from the staff employed at the home and the people living in the home who contacted the Commission to give their views about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and provided us with the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing an excellent service and they are striving to maintain the standards and make further improvements. The AQAA tells us that information is available about the home, that people when possible are seen before they move to the home and that all admission are on a trial basis. People moving to the home are given a contract, after they have been there for a while a post admission questionnaire is completed so that the home are aware of any improvements they could make to the process of moving in. Questionnaires received from people living in the home confirm that they were given enough information before moving to the home. Questionnaires received from people living in the home were generally complementary about the care/support they get, some of these had been completed with the support from relatives. Six questionnaires were returned; five said that the always receive the care and support they need, one said usually. Two residents said that staff were always available when they needed them, three said usually and one said mostly. We were told on the AQAA that on going monitoring is in place to ensure safe practice for medication administration and for those who self medicate. We are told that improvements have been made since the last visit with more activities and entertainment in the home and that more variety is available on the menu. Comments regarding the food were varied. The home has a complaints procedure and the manager reports that no complaints have been made to the home, none have been made directly to the Commission. No referrals have been made in relation to protecting vulnerable adults. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The manager told us that they employ suitable staff with variety of skills and people living in the home commented about staff as follows; Staff are very kind and helpful and sympathetic to an older persons needs. Consideration to the residents. Dont patronize. The staff are friendly and helpful. One relative has said my mum is treated with great respect, another that Sandiway Manor is in my opinion the best in this area of Cheshire. Two staff questionnaires were returned staff suggest that they need to meet more regularly with their manager, but that when asked what the home does well they have said, cares for residents to a high quality, respect their choices, views and opinions on things and look after residents needs. The manager tells us that she aims to maintain the high standard in the home and to respond to any of the feedback and requests made through the homes quality assurance and questionnaires. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 29 August 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
