CQC found this care home to be providing an Good service.

The inspector found there to be outstanding requirements from the previous inspection report. These are things the inspector asked to be changed, but found they had not done. The inspector also made 11 statutory requirements (actions the home must comply with) as a result of this inspection.

What the care home does well

The service provides a homely environment. Service users say they like living in the home. Service users say they are well looked after and get on well with the staff. Staff are highly committed to the home and the well being of the service users. The home has good equipment and appropriate aids to look after people.

What the care home could do better:

The home was without a manager and a new one should be appointed without delay. Care planning must be improved to ensure logical and systematic recording. Care plans should also ensure all service users needs are met. Medicines should be stored securely. Staff should ensure they are following company procedures and professional guidlines when they are giving out medicines. The fabric of the home is deteriorating due to lack of maintenance and investment. Essential mantenance must be carried out to restore the fabric of the home and ensure the safety of people who are in the building. Doors to cleaning cupboards and bathroom and toilet doors should have effective locks. The sluice machines need to be improved and the hygeine practice in this area needs to be reviewed to ensure the safety of staff and service users.

The home has twenty-nine single bedrooms and four double rooms. There are no ensuite facilities; toilets and bathrooms are provided throughout the home, some are equipped with specialist equipment to provide additional support during personal care. The home is set over two floors; there is a dining area and lounge on each floor. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 10 What we found: An unannounced random visit was made by T Moody, Regulatiory Inspector and J EschleBell, Local Area Manager, on 27 July 2009. The purpose of the visit was to ensure that the National Minimum Standards were being maintained in the home, following it move into receivership. During the visit inspectors looked at the fabric of the building, reviewed records, and spoke to service users and staff. Yes R No £ Outstanding statutory requirements These are requirements that were set at the previous inspection, but have still not been met. They say what the registered person had to do to meet the Care Standards Act 2000, Regulations 2001 and the National Minimum Standards. No. Standard Regulation Requirement Timescale for action 1 7 15 The individual plan of care 18/12/2008 for each service user must be kept under review. And include information as to how individual social needs are to be met. This will ensure that staff are taking into consideration all aspects of a persons individual care. 2 38 23 A record must be kept that confirms that all staff are taking part in regular fire drills and fire instruction. This will confirm that staff are receiving regular fire safety training. 18/10/2008 3 38 23 All staff must take part in at least one fire drill and receive one period of fire instruction. With a written record being presented to the commission to confirm that this has taken place. This will ensure that staff are clear as to what actions they will take in the event of a fire or the alarm sounding. Service users care plans should eb accurate to nsure their needs can be met. 30/09/2009 2 9 13 medicines should be stored securely and procedures should be followed by staff when giving and recording medication. Medicines should be stored and given in a safe menner to ensure the safety of service users. 31/08/2009 3 10 11 Locks on toilet and bathroom 31/08/2009 doors should work to ensure the privacy and dignity of people using these facilities Toilets and bathrooms should be capable of being locked to preserve the dignity and privacy of persons in the home. No. Standard Regulation Requirement Timescale for action be, so far as resoanably practicle, free from hazard to the safety of service users. 8 22 16 A call sytem and effective alarm should be provided in each room. an effective call system should be available to service users to ensure theri safety and well being. 9 25 23 The machanical ventilators in 31/08/2009 the home were clogged with dust, ineffective and had the potential to overheat. these fittings should be cleaned and made servicable to provide effective ventiallation. Suitable ventialation must be provided in all parts of the home to ensure the well being of service users. 10 26 13 Effective disposal machines must be availabe in each sluice. To ensure effective infection control and prevent hazards to staff and service users, effective disposal methods must be available to deal with for sanitary waste. 11 26 13 Suitable hand washing 31/08/2009 facilities must be available in the sluice areas.
