This inspection was carried out on 20th February 2006.

What the care home does well

People in the home continue to live in a comfortable and well-maintained home environment. People are supported to maintain valuable contacts with their family and contacts in the community. Staff are involved in ongoing training matters that reflects the needs of service users. People are supported in this family setting to be involved in a range of personal interests and hobbies.

What has improved since the last inspection?

The home has improved the recording system for people`s details to accurately reflect their individual lifestyles.

The registration will revert to LD ONLY when the named person is no longer in the home. 4th October 2005 Date of last inspection Brief Description of the Service: Springfield House is a former farmhouse that had been adapted to accommodate up to three people with a learning disability. Accommodation is provided in a domestic setting with service users living as part of the registered manager’s family. The home is located in a rural area and is set in its own grounds. The home provides wheelchair accessible transport. The home is registered to take up to three people with a learning disability. At present one of these is an older adult. This was an unannounced inspection, the second to the home in the inspection year. It took place over the morning period. The registered manager and senior carer were present and the three service users were met throughout the morning. The communal and private rooms used by service users were also looked around. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 1, 2, 3 and 4 There are admission procedures available that would inform prospective residents about the care and services provided. EVIDENCE: The admission procedure is kept up-to-date and guides the manager and staff on the actions to take in assessing and planning for an individual entering the home. This process would take into account the views and opinions of residents already living in the home. The manager and staff are well informed of people’s needs and wishes and place great importance on people’s continued health and welfare. There is a Statement of Purpose and Service User Guide provided and work has been done on these documents to bring them up-todate. Service users receive personal support in the way they prefer and require. Service users’ physical and emotional health needs are met. Service users retain, administer and control their own medication where appropriate, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. The ageing, illness and death of a service user are handled with respect and as the individual would wish. The Commission considers Standards 18, 19, and 20 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for the following standard(s): 18, 19 and 20 The manager and staff have very detailed knowledge of people’s needs and requirements. EVIDENCE: People’s personal, social and health care needs are detailed and the manager and staff continue to be committed and supportive in attending to people’s needs. These needs are also supported by community health and social care staff. Medication is securely stored and administered. Service users have the specialist equipment they require to maximise their independence. The home is clean and hygienic. EVIDENCE: The communal and private rooms assessed on this inspection are well maintained in a comfortable and homely manner. People’s bedrooms are personalised and arranged in the way they want them and the manager and staff support people in this. Each room is individual and these and all other parts of the home are clean and safely maintained. The bathroom and toilet facilities are appropriately sited and provide specialist equipment for people to use in comfort and safety. EVIDENCE: The registered manager is supported in her role by senior staff. These roles compliment each other with each role being clearly defined. There is an open and relaxed atmosphere in the home with people being comfortable in their surroundings and with the staff who support them.
