This inspection was carried out on 4th January 2010.

It is an annual review prepared by CQC after examining previous reports and information from the provider. At the time of this report, CQC judged the service to be Good.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

We give a quality rating following a full review of the service. If yes, what have they been: Date of last key inspection: Date of last annual service review (if applicable): Brief description of the service The Beeches nursing home is situated in Coppull, approximately two miles from Chorley town centre. It is located off the main road in three acres of land with gardens to the front and rear. The home can be accessed by a regular bus service. Annual Service Review Page 2 of 6 2 9 0 8 2 0 0 7 Mr Mohammed Hussain, Mrs Anwar Hussain, and Mr Naveed Hussain own the home, which is registered to provide accommodation for up to 34 older people with personal, nursing or dementia care needs. The Beeches has both single and shared private accommodation available on two floors; the upper floor being accessed by a passenger lift or stair case. All bedrooms have wash hand basins and there are 16 rooms with an en-suite facilities. A variety of communal areas are available throughout, where people living at the home are able to entertain their visitors, eat their meals, join in activities or just simply relax. The Beeches promotes a flexible, friendly environment, so that people are able to entertain their visitors or take their meals within the privacy of their own accommodation, should they so wish. Information about the service and facilities available is included within the Statement of Purpose and Service Users Guide, which is supplied to any potential residents and their families. The fees, as at 26th November 2009, range from £490 to £630 per week. Additional costs are incurred for hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers and magazines. Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included. The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment, referred to as the AQAA, that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people living at the home. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. The Inspection Record. This is a document where we record any activity or information that we receive about the home. Surveys returned to us by people using the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened at the home, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information requested. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service for the people living at The Beeches and that the providers know what further improvements they need to make. We received comment cards from eight people living at The Beeches who tell us that they are generally happy with the service provided. They are particularly pleased with the care and support they receive, including medical care and how the staff listen to them and act on what they say. All eight tell us that they know who to speak to if they were not happy and that they would know how to make a formal complaint, should the need arise. When asked what the home does well one person simply wrote, everything. Other comments from those living at The Beeches included, The staff treat people with dignity and respect and choices are offered, The staff are friendly and caring. The Beeches feels homely and overall the care is of a high standard. Relatives told us, I visit the home at different times. I find The Beeches clean and staff are very helpful. The meals are varied and plentiful and People are taken care of very well in every respect and always with care and compassion. Everyone is always clean and tidy with regular visits from the hairdresser and chiropodist. When asked what the home could do better one person wrote, more activities and another commented, Personally I feel a little more mental stimulation would be beneficial. Other comments included, I would like to see a more regular routine of cleaning residents after meals. This is sometimes missed and more attention could be given to cleaning of finger nails and To improve on food, such as tea time treats with various sandwiches and cakes. When asked if there was anything else people would like to tell us one relative commented, I am more than happy with the care and attention we receive at the Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 home. My husband who lives at the home and I are both given all the help and assistance we need. I am very pleased with all aspects of the care home and another told us, In general we have great respect for the staff. They do an excellent job given certain constraints and always with a cheerful disposition. We received comment cards from six people working at The Beeches who, in general, provided us with positive responses to the questions asked. In general they tell us that they are given training which is relevant to their role, which helps them understand and meet the individual needs of people they provide support for and which keeps them up to date with new ways of working. They also tell us that their employer carries out all relevant checks before people start work at the home and that they know what to do should they have concerns about the welfare of someone living at The Beeches. Additional information from staff included, The Beeches provides a friendly atmosphere, it has good relationships with relatives and serves good home cooking and It gives all the help and support needed by the residents. Two staff members indicated that staffing levels could be better in the afternoon and at night time. One staff member wrote on the comment card, I would gladly place one of my family members in The Beeches to be cared for. Our matron Krystyna is a great boss and another commented, This is a nice and friendly home. I have enjoyed working at The Beeches for nearly eight years. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. We have not received any complaints or safeguarding referrals since our last inspection. The providers work well with us and they have demonstrated that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people living at The Beeches. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The Care quality Commission will continue to monitor information about this service and will carry out an inspection when required.
