CQC found this care home to be providing an Excellent service.

The inspector made no statutory requirements on the home as a result of this inspection and there were no outstanding actions from the previous inspection report.

What the care home does well

Each person has an individual plan, which is regularly reviewed and amended to reflect their changing needs. Health care needs are identified and met. Good systems are in place for administering and managing peoples` medicines. People make choices about their routines and lifestyle. A good variety of food was available with special diets provided as necessary. Alternatives are available at meal times. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints or allegations. Staff have appropriate training in safeguarding vulnerable people and this helps to protect people living in the home. The home is very comfortable and well maintained. Aids and adaptations are fitted to suit the needs of the people living in the home. Good infection control procedures are in place to protect people living in the home and staff. Staffing levels are sufficient to meet the needs of the people living in the home. Staff have plenty of training opportunities to make sure they can meet peoples` needs. Staff have regular supervision to make sure that they do their job properly.Good systems are in place to check the quality of the service and these take account of the views of the people living at the home, their relatives and professionals working with people. The manager and deputy manager are qualified and experienced in providing care. Good health and safety systems protect the people living in the home and the staff working there.

The home was previously a hotel and has been extended to accommodate up to thirty-five elderly people. The home is near to local shops and Berwick can be reached by car or bus in minutes. Bus services pass by the entrance to the home and the main line train station is in Berwick a few minutes away. Turret Villa has bedroom accommodation on the ground and first floor, but there is no lift fitted. All rooms are well appointed with en-suite accommodation. The Statement of Purpose/Service User Guide is available from the home and gives clear information about the service provided at Turret Villa. Charges not included in the fees are for hairdressing, dry cleaning, telephone calls, newspapers and magazines. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: Turret Villa continues to provide an excellent service to the people living in the home. Individual plans provide good information about individuals needs and how they are met by staff. Good systems are in place for assessing peoples needs and for updating records to show any changes. People living in the home said that they are very happy living at Turret Villa and that they get good support from the staff. They said that they are treated with dignity and respect and that they are able to make choices about their routines and lifestyle. There was a good variety of food provided and people said that the food was excellent and they were able to ask for an alternative if they did not like what was on the menu. Good staffing levels are provided so that people get the support they require. Staff have plenty of training opportunities and good numbers of staff have achieved national qualifications in care. They receive regular supervision and feel able to raise issues with the manager or the senior staff about the operation of the home. The home is very well maintained and has good systems in place for repairs, general maintenance and refurbishment. Policies and procedures for Health and Safety protect people living and working in the home. There are regular health and safety audits to ensure that the home is safe and that working practices protect the people living and working at Turret Villa. People are protected by the homes good systems for dealing with complaints and safeguarding issues.
