What the care home does well

Virginia Lodge provides a high standard of care and residents know that their needs will be met by the services provided in the home. Residents` needs are assessed and recorded and care staff have the information they need to provide the care individuals require. Care staff are trained and competent and support residents in a manner which takes into account their preferences and promotes their independence and rights. Residents said, "The staff are all lovely, you can have a good chat with them". Residents maintain control of their lives and the choices they make are respected. Meals are well planned and provide a nutritious diet. Residents said, "The meals are jolly good". Virginia Lodge provides a safe and comfortable environment for residents to live in.

What has improved since the last inspection?

Virginia Lodge continues to provide a high standard of care to the people living there.

The home is registered for a maximum of 32 service users to include: up to 32 service users in the category of OP (Old age, not falling within any other category) up to 10 service users in the category of DE(E) (Dementia over 65 years of age) up to 1 service user in the category of LD(E) (Learning disability over 65 years of age) up to 1 service user in the category of DE (Dementia under 65 years of age) Date of last inspection 24 February 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Virginia Lodge is a residential care home registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection to provide personal care and accommodation for up to thirty-two residents. The home is owned and managed by Mrs Julie Walsh. Virginia Lodge is located approximately one mile from Longtown and is in a rural setting. Longtown has a range of amenities including a post office, GP surgeries, local shops and banks. Accommodation for residents is provided by twenty-eight single bedrooms and two double rooms which two people can choose to share. Ten single bedrooms and one double room have ensuite toilet facilities and there are accessible toilet and bathing facilities close to all the accommodation used by residents. The home is set in pleasant grounds which are accessible to the people living there. The inspection was unannounced carried out on Saturday 24th September 2005. The inspection focussed on how well the services provided in the home meet the needs of the residents living there. This was assessed by speaking to residents, visitors and staff, observing activity in the home and examining the records which care homes are required to hold. Prospective service users have the information they need to make an informed choice about where to live. Each service user has a written contract/ statement of terms and conditions with the home. No service user moves into the home without having had his/her needs assessed and been assured that these will be met. Service users and their representatives know that the home they enter will meet their needs. Prospective service users and their relatives and friends have an opportunity to visit and assess the quality, facilities and suitability of the home. Service users assessed and referred solely for intermediate care are helped to maximise their independence and return home. The Commission considers Standards 3 and 6 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 3, 4 and 6. Residents’ needs are assessed and known to the staff in the home and people receive the support they require. EVIDENCE: Residents’ needs are thoroughly assessed before they are offered accommodation in the home to ensure that the services provided are suitable to provide the support they need. The assessments are updated as peoples’ needs change and they continue to receive the care they require. Virginia Lodge does not provide intermediate care and Standard 6 is not applicable. The service user’s health, personal and social care needs are set out in an individual plan of care. Service users’ health care needs are fully met. Service users, where appropriate, are responsible for their own medication, and are protected by the home’s policies and procedures for dealing with medicines. Service users feel they are treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. Service users are assured that at the time of their death, staff will treat them and their family with care, sensitivity and respect. The Commission considers Standards 7, 8, 9 and 10 the key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 7, 8, 9 and 10. Residents receive the personal and health care they require in a manner which respects their rights, privacy and dignity. EVIDENCE: Residents’ needs are recorded in their personal files and care staff are knowledgeable about the support individuals need. The care plans have been reviewed regularly and as residents’ needs change to ensure that they receive a high standard of care. Residents receive health care support from local GP practices and specialist services as they need. The standard of care is high and is provided in a manner which respects residents’ rights and protects their privacy and dignity. Medication is handled safely in the home and residents’ welfare is maintained. Service users find the lifestyle experienced in the home matches their expectations and preferences, and satisfies their social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs. Service users maintain contact with family/ friends/ representatives and the local community as they wish. Service users are helped to exercise choice and control over their lives. Service users receive a wholesome appealing balanced diet in pleasing surroundings at times convenient to them. The Commission considers all of the above key standards to be inspected at least once during a 12 month period. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 14 and 15. Residents are supported to maintain control of their lives and the decisions they make are respected. EVIDENCE: Residents make choices about their lives in the home including where to spend their time, whether to take part in the activities provided and where to eat their meals. Meals are varied and provide a nutritious diet. Residents said the meals are “jolly good” and “there’s always plenty to eat”. Residents have a choice of meals and support is provided with eating as people require. EVIDENCE: Care staff are aware of the actions to take if they are concerned about the safety or welfare of a resident. Residents’ rights are respected and appropriate advice is taken if there are concerns about an individual’s well being. JUDGEMENT – we looked at outcomes for standard(s) 19, 20, 22, 24 and 26. Accommodation is clean and comfortable and is suitable to meet the needs of the people living in the home. EVIDENCE: Virginia Lodge provides safe and well-maintained accommodation for residents to live in. The standard of decoration and furnishing is high and the environment is comfortable, pleasant and hygienic. The home has two lounges and residents choose where to spend their time, in their own rooms or with other people. The home has a separate sitting room where residents can receive visitors in private. Residents are able to bring their own possessions into their rooms and have personalised their rooms as they wish. The home has a range of equipment to assist residents to maintain their independence including specialist equipment provided for individual residents. All areas of the home are cleaned thoroughly and the environment is clean and hygienic. Residents receive a high standard of care from staff who are trained and competent and whom they know. EVIDENCE: Care staff have received a range of training to give them the skills and knowledge to provide the care residents need and to carry out their duties safely. Care staff have developed positive relationships with the residents in the home and residents said, “The staff are all lovely, you can have a good chat with them”. The standard of care is high and residents receive the support they need in a relaxed and friendly manner which promotes their independence and takes into account their personal preferences. Residents’ rights, safety and welfare are protected in the home. EVIDENCE: The home has clear policies and procedures to ensure residents’ safety and welfare. Records are clearly written, up to date and are held securely. Care staff have access to the information they need to carry out their duties safely and to provide the support individuals need.
