What the care home does well
Pre admission assessments are good. Prospective residents are invited to "sample" the home to see if they like it before making any decision about moving in. Activities take place at the home regularly. These are designed to be stimulating and to cater for the needs and abilities of all residents. The choice of sitting areas allows different activities to take place at the same time so that people can choose which suits them best. The reminiscence work that is underway is imaginative and has provoked a lot of interest, relatives have been asked to join in and provide information for the displays. A recent trip to Eden Camp has proved highly successful and a further trip is planned. Outside entertainers visit the home regularly, several residents go out with their relatives and the staff make sure that people have opportunities to go for walks and to the local shops as they wish. Residents and staff were very complimentary about the quality of food and the range of meals provided. A significant amount of work has taken place to improve the home since the present owner took over three years ago. An annual redecoration programme has been established and work is on target to meet the deadlines set for this year. Residents and visitors say the home is always kept fresh and clean.
What has improved since the last inspection?
The environment continues to improve. A new extension has been added to the home and a safe garden and patio has been created at the front of the house. More work is planned for the garden area next year. Internally, new furniture has been purchased and the plan for the refurbishment of bedrooms is on target. New equipment has recently been purchased so that residents who need assistance can be moved safely.
What the care home could do better:
Everyone has a plan of care detailing how their individual needs will be met. Staff need to take more care to make sure that the daily records show that residents are receiving the care and support outlined in the plans. The home owner acknowledges that many of the bedrooms need upgrading and a plan is in place to address this issue. Paper towel dispensers need to be stocked regularly and liquid soap made available for use to reduce the risk of cross infection. Staff recruitment procedures must be improved. In order to protect residents, all of the necessary checks must be carried out before new staff start work at the home.
