What the care home does well
This is a well-managed service, where staff work hard to maintain a resident focused service. The home provides a clean, comfortable and homely environment for residents. The atmosphere is calm, warm and welcoming and staff are friendly. Residents` needs are met in a way that respects their privacy and dignity. Residents are encouraged to exercise choice about how and where to spend their time and there are opportunities to take part in social activities. Residents were very positive about living at Westholme. Residents are encouraged to maintain interests outside the home, and staff assist them where possible. One resident said, " I have just moved in, so I am going for a walk to explore the area." Visitors said they feel welcome. One said, " I am always offered a cup of tea, and they keep me informed about my mothers care." A group of residents said, " We are happy here. The staff are helpful and kind."
What has improved since the last inspection?
The kitchen floor has been replaced, and no longer represents a health and safety hazard. Lifestyle plans now include care plans for people with diabetes and poor mobility, to ensure their needs can be met. The senior staff have undertaken a comprehensive quality review of services provided at the home. An action plan had been produced to improve areas where a shortfall in standards was identified. 50% of care staff have achieved a qualification in NVQ.
What the care home could do better:
The home has number of residents with dementia. It is of concern that staff have not received training appropriate to meeting the needs of this group of residents. Written information on the pre inspection questionnaire identified 18 residents have dementia. Not all staff have up to date moving and handling training. This could put both residents and staff at risk. The annual training plan for staff should be redesigned as it is confusing as a document to assess what staff training has taken place. The kitchen must have cooking facilities that are reliable. One cooker had been condemned and the remaining cooker had fluctuating temperatures, that resulted in over or undercooked food. Risk assessments for identified risks such as challenging behaviour, must be included in the Lifestyle plans of residents, when risks have been identified. This was rectified during the visit.
