Conditions of registration: Date of last inspection 4th August 2005 Brief Description of the Service: Wishing Well is a care home registered by Mrs Denise Mary Thompson to provide personal care and accommodation for up to three older people of either gender. The home consists of a two-storey semi-detached house situated on a quiet road in a suburb of York and is within walking distance of local facilities and amenities including shops, cafes and pubs. The amenities of York city centre are also accessible by transport. All three bedrooms are for single accommodation, none of which has en suite facilities and are all on the first floor, close to the shared bathroom. There are additional WC facilities on the ground floor. The home has a well -maintained garden and an area of hardstanding for parking to the front. There is ramped access to the home. The registered person is the principal carer and she is assisted by her husband and a part time care assistant. The registered person and her husband live on the premises. This is an overview of what the inspector found during the inspection. This inspection was announced at short notice on 26th January 2006. It took four hours, including preparation, and time for writing the report. All service users were at home and all were spoken to. A relative was also present. There has been one new admission since the last inspection and this service user was spoken to in her room, in private. Her assessment, care plan and all other documentation were examined. All core standards were covered at the last inspection and so this inspection focused upon speaking with service users and the proprietors about general issues of care. This touched upon several standards but covered none completely. No narrative has been included under specific groups of standards for this reason. What the service does well:
The proprietor, her husband and a care assistant, who make up the staff team, continue to be committed to putting the needs and wishes of the residents first. Residents are involved in the day-to-day running of the home as much as possible. During the inspection, a service user was observed enthusiastically helping with clearing up and cleaning surfaces in the kitchen. The living environment of the home is particularly pleasant, with tasteful décor and good quality furnishing. A good- sized garden with an area for service users to sit out is at the rear of the home. Service users are encouraged to bring personal items; photographs and ornaments with them and these were seen both in their rooms and also in the main home, with photographs of past outings and celebrations clearly displayed on a notice board. The proprietor said that when the weather allowed, she and her husband would take the service users out either for the day or for short breaks. They have a static caravan, which they use during the warmer months. The assessment for the new service user was detailed and formed the basis of a care plan. All health care professional visits were clearly recorded on file. The newly admitted service user said she was very happy with her room and with the care she was receiving. She said she was well treated and that the proprietors would often come to check what help she needed and if she wanted a drink or something to eat. She said both Mr and Mrs Thompson were easy to talk to and that they would listen to any concern she had. The visitor said she was very happy with the care offered to her relative and commented that she and her husband were often included in the outings arranged by the home. She said that the proprietors were very patient and kind with her relative and gave her the time to express herself and any anxieties she might have, often offering reassurance.
