Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The results of the previous key inspection of the service. What has this told us about the service? The previous key inspection report for 19th June 2008 identified that people who use the service benefit from the home having good systems for assessing peoples needs, person centred care planning and that residents are supported to make their own decisions about their lives. Peoples healthcare needs were met and they were being supported by well-trained staff, most of whom have achieved the Learning Disability Qualification. The people who live in the home are protected by the homes recruitment policies and practices. The homes annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) was detailed and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service to people who use the service. The AQAA states people who live in the home have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities both inside and outside of the home and are supported to undertake educational courses and work placements. The residents participate in formulating their own life plans which are produced in pictorial format and held by the service user in their own room. The AQAA states how the service has improved during the last twelve months and that there are new care plans in place that have been completed with the service user and identifies the residents choices, life goals and aspirations using their own words and thoughts. Service users are encouraged to undertake their activities of daily living independently as they are able within a risk assessment framework and to lead a full, interesting and enjoyable life style. The AQAA says that the home has a well trained, experienced and stable staff team which gives confidence to the service users to voice their opinions and empowers them to communicate freely with staff. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 The AQAA tells us what improvements have been made to the environment over the past year and the plans for the coming year is to provide new furniture for the lounge. The AQAA states other improvements for the coming year as: Ensure that residents are encouraged to communicate their choices and opinions at every opportunity and their views are discussed at team meetings and plans are made to action requests. Staff wil continue to receive the training they need to undertake their roles effectively. Continue to look for varied outside activities to encourage residents social inclusion within the community. The barriers identified to this are financial restraints on buying a larger vehicle to benefit residents from the home and the sister home close by, to participate in community activity. Since the last inspection the AQAA states the home has received no complaints. CQC have also not received any complaints about the service. There has been one safeguarding referral which has been resolved and the home followed the safeguarding procedures appropriately. The AQAA states that staff continue to improve residents awareness of abuse issues and what to do if they are not happy. For this annual service review we received comments through survey questionnaires from six service users who were positive in their comments and indicated they were happy with their lives. Comments said: They let me go to work and out and about by myself. I do not like cleaning my own room. I like my own room. I wish I could do more cooking. The house is nice and clean and the staff look after me. I would like more walks and to go to the pub. They let me do the dish washing. They let me do what I like in my bedroom and I do not know how the home could be better. Three staff surveys were returned and told us that the home has a good atmosphere to live and work in and is well run with good management and staff who are well trained by the organisation of Sanctuary Care. However, the home needs more funding for social events. The home continues to keep us informed of any significant events and data in the AQAA demonstrates that policies and procedures are kept under review and there are not any concerns as to the safety of the home. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and we will do a key inspection by the 19th June 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
