Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included, the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment or AQAA report that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys we conducted with people who used the service. Information we have about how the service managed any complaints. What the service had told us about things that have happened in the service; these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspections and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. As well as the above we completed a risk assessment of the service to ensure we had enough information about the service to determine the quality rating has not changed in the past 12 months. What has this told us about the service? The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment or AQAA report was received on time. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the service is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. For example the AQAA report stated that the service would continue to listen to people who use the service and other stakeholders. They said they do this by, We encourage people and their relatives to participate in completing personal care plans so the care provided is given according to the persons needs and wishes. They also told us, We encourage people and their relatives to give us comments on our service by sending regular questionnaires in which we ask them to express their opinion on the service we provide, their views are then collated and audited. The service was able to identify what changes it had made over the last year as a result of listening to peoples views. These included, We have consulted with people and introduced a `small bites menu, as well as tailoring menus to individuals needs and requests. They went on to tell us We have employed an activities coordinator, to meet peoples recreational and social needs. The AQAA report told us that a full refurbishment of all communal areas of the home Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 had been completed and a programme to refurbish all bedrooms was well underway. This would include redecoration, new carpets and furniture. This was important to ensure that people were living in a homely and safe environment. The service was able to identify the developments they were aiming to achieve over the next 12 months. These included, organising further mandatory and specialist training for the staff team to ensure peoples diverse needs could be met by appropriately skilled and trained staff. The inspection record showed us that the service notified us of incidents required by the regulations. The standards in the service were monitored regularly by a representative of the organisation. This helps to ensure that the service is run in the best interest of people who use it. We received four surveys from people who use the service. When we asked what the home did well they told us, Everything. Cleaning, care and meals are all good. Provides good quality care and attention over the 24 hour period. Attentive and caring staff. Everything is super. When we asked what the home could do better they told us, Nothing as far as Im concerned everything is run very well. Nothing. More variety in selection of food at tea time. Would like something different to sandwiches. Provide breakfast before 9am. One health professional returned a survey to us and they told us that overall, they thought the home provided a good level of care and support to the people who lived there. We sent surveys to five staff. Four staff returned their surveys. Overall, they were all very positive and staff made the following comments about what the service did well. They told us, It meets clients needs and the home is well maintained. The manager and the deputy manager are approachable and effective in addressing any issues. People are provided with good care, we protect their rights and give people choices. The home is welcoming to everyone, we have good relationships with health professionals and visitors. We asked for information from Sheffield City Councils Contract and Commissioning service and they had no concerns about the service over the last year. The AQAA report tells us that the service had an experienced staff team and that, over the last year more staff had gained NVQ2 care awards and are now working towards the NVQ3 awards. This meant that over 70 per cent of the staff team had completed the NVQ2 care award. They also told us the deputy manager was working towards completing the NVQ4 care management award. This was positive and showed the services commitment to supporting staff in developing their skills and knowledge. From our records and information contained in the AQAA we know that there had been no complaints made about the service over the last year. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 From the AQAA information we know that there had been no adult safeguarding referral made over the last year from the service. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? It is our Statutory responsibility to inspect all care service at least once every 3 years. The completion of the Risk Assessment and Annual Service Review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service therefore we are not planning to inspect this service before 13th November 2011. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
