Aaron View is situated in the North of Sheffield in the district of Chapeltown. The home is within a short driving distance to local amenities such as shops, churches and a library. It is a two-storey building with lift access to the upper level. The home is accessible for wheelchair users.The home is well decorated with both single and double accommodation, some rooms are en-suite. There are two lounges and two dining
Annual Service Review Page 2 of 7 No 0 9 0 2 2 0 0 9 areas. The gardens are accessible to wheelchair users and there is a patio with seating area. A copy of the incorporated Statement of Purpose and Service User Guide is on display at the entrance. Copies of the last Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection reports are available to read. Information about how to raise any issues of concern or make a complaint is also displayed in the entrance hall. Information about the cost of weekly fees can be obtained by contacting the manager at the home. The home charges extra for private chiropody, toiletries, clothing, telephone, holidays and hairdressing. What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, which was on the 9th February 2009. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. 3 surveys returned to us from professionals, 4 surveys returned by relatives and 4 surveys returned by staff. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the service is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The service is consulting with people regularly about their care, which helps to ensure people are satisfied with the service they receive. The AQAA states: We have altered menu choices, as this was highlighted in a residents meeting. We have also planted external area raised flower beds so that residents have easy access. The maintenance man encourages the residents to participate in the re-planting and watering etc of the raised garden areas. People are given a choice of whom they would like to sit with and where, as this promotes the building of relationships within their living environment. The staff are trained in the recognition of body language and the use of varied communication techniques which include written, verbal and picture cues. The service has made improvements over the last twelve months. The AQAA states: We have introduced new care plans which include individualised social activity plans this will be promoted by the use of the allocated key workers. The home is now involved with the Locally Enhanced Service, which provides enhanced medical services to people. This service aims to improve quality and Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 consistency of medical care, which will include improving chronic disease and medicines management. It will also address end of life care and aims to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions. The home has had more entertainers and involvement with students who foster cross age development. Staff have received training on various specialised areas. We have now employed an activity co-ordinator. The training of staff has improved. We have obtained training from care home support team, training has included privacy, dignity and communication, catheter care, depression and dementia. Surveys that were returned to us were in the main positive. Health professionals said: When I visit Aaron View, I am always made to feel welcome and the staff are helpful. My only concern is staffing levels. People would benefit from having extra staff on each shift. Staff are always polite, appear kind and caring and have peoples best interests at heart. Communication could be better, so that when we go to the home, the carers know why we are visiting. The staff look after people very well. Relatives said: There is a genuine concern for the welfare of people. Staff deal with people very well. The home is clean and tidy. The staff are very friendly. It would be better if there were more activities for the residents. The home is always welcoming, they hide nothing, there is a clean, calm and organised atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble and Im never made to feel like a nuisance. Food could be better. It is prepared well but there could be more variety. Friendly staff offer attentive care. Four staff returned surveys. When asked, Are you given up to date information about the needs of the people you support or care for?. One said always and three said usually. When asked, Does your manager give you enough support?. One said often, one said regularly and two said sometimes. Staff said: I have worked for Aaron View for many years. I think it is very homely and people are well cared for. At the moment we are short staffed and it puts a lot of pressure on the staff. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 Care standards can sometimes fall short due to under staffing. The home provides a safe, loving and caring environment. People are kept clean and well dressed. In the AQAA under the section What we could do better the service said: We are aware we need to recruit further competent staff to ensure continuity of care for people. The AQAA states that the service has received one complaint in the last 12 months. This was resolved. We have not received any complaints about the service. The service themselves referred one incident to the local authority as a safeguarding alert. Sheffield Local Authority told us: We have one safeguarding from January 2009 and two from February 2009. All cases have been closed following receipt of an investigation report from Aaron View. The perpetrator, in one case was dismissed following investigation and substantiating of allegations. We also received an incident reporting form in June 2009 around inadequate policies. A response was received and this is logged as inconclusive. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? It is our Statutory responsibility to inspect all care service at least once every 3 years The completion of the Annual Service Review has not changed our view of the quality rating of this service therefore we are not planning to inspect this service before 8th February 2012.
