Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information about the way the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when it was requested. We looked at the information in the AQAA, which showed what improvements to the service had been made in the last twelve months as well as further development plans. The AQAA showed that the home has made improvements as a result of suggestions from the people who use the service and their families. The manager said in the returned AQAA that in the last 12 months they have: Made changes to the menus and the food that they provide. Have reviewed the activity program to meet the needs of the people. They are continually up dating and up grading the environment - bedrooms, lounges, dining rooms and garden. The flooring to bedrooms has changed to more suitable flooring to meet the assessed needs of the people. They have updated the garden with new furniture and a hedge, also added colour with a variety of flowers and plants to enhance the seating area which has been extended. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 They have redecorated the visitors toilets to both ground and first floor. Both the store room and corridor in the kitchen area have been redecorated. There are new carpeting to the first floor corridor and lounge. Comments from people living at the home and/or their relatives on what the the home does well included the following: I could not wish for better care for my terminally ill mother Aberford Hall is a friendly home. Happy atmosphere, greets you when you come through the front door. Staff are always cheerful and people are well cared for. Staff take a pride in their work. Some staff are excellent and really care about people, very helpfull with hospital and clinic arrangements. My mother is well cared for, well fed and content in her own little world. She can often be difficult, uncooperative and down right stubborn. In spite of this she is always treated with dignity and respect. All the staff treat her with patience, care and a great deal of love. I visit several other elderly people in care homes in Leeds and this is by far the best. What the home could do better included the following: More attention to details eg clothes have been lost and damaged during laundering. They always seems to be a shortage of staff. Comments from the survey returned from staff about the service included the following: We look after the people at Aberford Hall very well. We provide good care for the elderly in a very pleasant atmosphere for both people and staff. All care staff, nurses and manager work well together as a team. Aberford Hall has a good reputation for care for the elderly and gives support to the familys while their relatives are here. Comments from staff on what the home could do better included: Home need to upgrade the bathrooms to enable hoist to be used. The bath should be in the middle of the floor and not against the wall. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 with us and have shown us that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will complete a key inspection by 28th October 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
