What the care home does well We found that significant progress has been made with regard to assessment and care planning. The care plan seen gave staff clear directions of how to look after people on an individual basis. Staff spoken with were able to demonstrate that they were aware of people`s likes and dislikes. We spoke with some of the people who live in the home and their relatives. They confirmed that they are consulted about their care plans, have agreed with the content and are happy with the care they receive. There was one requirement made about nutrition which was not included in the warning letter. This requirement was that the home must keep appropriate records so that the decision could be made about whether people were receiving a nutritious, well-balanced diet. We saw that those records are now being kept. What the care home could do better: The home should continue to build on the good work already done with regard to care planning and work towards complying with the requirements made about staff training, to be achieved by 30 June 2010. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This inspection was carried out on 21 May 20 by two inspectors. The purpose of this inspection was to assess the progress that had been made in meeting with some of the statutory requirements made at the previous key inspection of the home. Due to the serious nature of some of the requirements, a warning letter was issued telling the provider what the home must do. This warning letter describes failure to undertake appropriate assessments to reflect the changing needs of the people who live in the home. We found that one person who had been in hospital had not been reassessed prior to returning to the home, despite their needs having changed. We also found poor care planning which failed to clearly identify how service user needs would be met in terms of health and welfare. In addition care plans were not kept under review and revised to reflect service users changing health and welfare needs. We looked in detail at the care records of people and spoke with staff. With regard to care records, those seen at the key inspection in January 2010 were reviewed and re examined. An additional random sample was reviewed at this visit. The warning letter asked the home to review and revise assessments at any time when it is necessary to do so having regard to any change in circumstances. Also care plan evaluations must refer to any deterioration or improvement and reflect any changes to individual health and personal care needs. In addition where appropriate and, unless it is impracticable the service users or their representatives should be consulted about the plan, any revisions and notified of the changes. We identified that staff had not received the required training in adult protection, moving and handling and first aid. However the date for compliance with regard to staff training is 30 June 2010 and therefore a further visit will be made after that date.
