What the care home does well The home places a great emphasis upon people living as full and interesting a life as possible within their capacity, taking into consideration personal preferences. Residents follow their own pursuits and the AQAA shows that the home enables events and chosen recreation to take place. Residents take an active part in the home, for example; choosing menus, reading during services if they wish, designing the garden, planning events and choosing speakers on topics of interest. The home has a regular newsletter and there are good links with the local community. The recreational programme is continually updated to reflect the interests of those at the home. Medication handling has improved as individual medication is now dispensed in named bags from the pharmacy. This means that potential errors of administration are reduced. Each individual is encouraged to develop care plan goals towards which they can work. This means people living at the home are placed firmly in the centre of all care planning. Staff have had deprivation of liberty training with the manager and each person has a checklist on mental capacity to ensure people are enabled to keep as independent as possible and can make choices about the way they live their lives. Staff are developing life histories with each person which build a picture of the whole person throughout their lives, their friends and family, jobs and interests. These histories are supported by photographic records and provide a good basis from which to begin conversation and to allow staff to understandand get to know each person better. The home has installed a cinema system. Many people living at the home were spoken with during the site visit. People had very positive things to say about their lives at Alba Rose. One person said: `We are always going out on a trip. We`ve been around the sea front, to Filey, out for tea and cakes. It`s really lovely.` Another person said: `The staff treat you really well, like you count. It`s as though there is nobody else for them to look after, only you. You never feel rushed.` Another person said: `The meals here are wonderful. We often discuss menus and if we ask for something we always get it.` Another person said; `We have very nice visitors, children, and people with dogs come, people who sing, we have a dance and go out in the bus, and we can do baking. I really enjoy that.` Photographs in the foyer showed people enjoying being involved in a number of activities, including having a personal trainer come to the home to work individually with people to improve their strength and flexibility. What the care home could do better: The service has an excellent quality assurance system. Required improvements are identified by this system and the owner, manager and staff work hard to make sure people get the care they need and enjoy their lives at Alba Rose.
