What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at the information that we have, or asked for, since our last key inspection of Arlington House on 10 February 2009. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the home. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys sent to people who live at the home and staff. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints. What the home has told us about things that have happened in the service; these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection which was made to the home on 10 February 2009. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us the Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It showed what had happened with the home over the last year and gave us the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that Arlington House is still providing a good service and it continues to maintain and improve the service for people who live there. The home had received two complaints during the twelve months before this review. They were both resolved within twenty-eight days. The commission had not received any complaints about Arlington House during the year before this review. The home has not made any referrals under the local safeguarding adults procedures over the last year. Two people who use the service returned surveys to us. They commented, The staff are always ready and willing when anyone needs them. They are always cheerful with the residents. After experiencing several homes, I dont think I could find a better one now and They are a small home and give better care. Food is prepared in smaller quantities giving better quality and warmer meals. One staff member returned a survey and they told us, We meet the needs of the residents and make sure they are safe, happy and comfortable. We make time to talk Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 to the residents and see them and individuals with differing needs. The home is inviting, welcoming place to live and a happy place for residents. I am happy working here. Areas where the people who use the service and staff member thought improvements could be made included checking teeth are soaked/cleaned and check hearing aids removed at night; more opportunities for outings to various places such as lunch at the local pub or visit to shopping centre; and personalise bedrooms more and have more activities. The manager told us in the AQAA that by listening to people who use the service they have started work on replanting the front garden. They have started a new system with regard to drying clothing so that staff are more accountable for missing items and labelling items of new clothing. The manager said that more group activities are being offered to residents on a weekly basis including quizzes, handicrafts, pub meals out, regular entertainers and individual time out of the home with staff for shopping or scenic car journeys. The AQAA also told us that the services plans for the year following this review. This included adding details of the admission procedure in the homes brochure and developing the quality questionnaire to include asking for information about the experience of moving into the home. The manager said that they intended to provide more opportunities for appropriate exercises and physical activity, trips out and entertainers. They were hoping to appoint a new activities co-ordinator to ensure that daily life is stimulating and varied. The manager intends to reinstate the homes suggestion box for residents and families and continue with the development of the programme of improvement and renewal at the home. With regard to the staff team the manager said that improvements in training and induction were planned and training in nutrition for relevant staff would be undertaken. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last main inspection there and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They have shown us that the service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who live there. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and we will do a key inspection within three years of the previous inspection being carried out. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people living there. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
