What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. We sent surveys to nine service users, five relatives, ten staff and four health and social care professionals. We received two surveys from service users, three staff surveys, one relative survey and two health professional surveys. Information we have about how the service has managed a safeguarding incident. We looked at What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The most recent key inspection for this service took place in August 2008. At this time we found that outcomes for people who use the service were good in all areas. These were, Choice of Home, Health and Personal Care, Daily life and activities, Complaints and Protection, Environment, Staffing and Management and Administration. No requirements were issued as the service complied with Care Home Regulations. Since this time the service has completed an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment. We received this when we asked for it and it answered all our questions fully. This shows us that the service users views about the home are gathered during meetings, which take place every 4 to 6 weeks, through questionnaires and they can also use a suggestion box . People are consulted about their particular needs and wishes as they are involved in the care planning process. As a result of listening to people the service has listed a number of improvements that they have made in the past twelve months. This includes redecoration of some areas and the instillation of new equipment, for example a new bath and a stairlift. They have also developed menu cards to help residents to remember what food they have ordered. The service is able to support residents different needs , for example menus can cater for any particular religious or cultural requirements and staff will support residents to access spiritual services. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 People we surveyed were generally positive about the service We received the following comments: The home gives a high standard of care in a friendly homely atmosphere to its residents keeps me well cared for and secure my mother appears settled at Basingfield Court and staff appear friendly and caring The health care professionals said: pleased with the service provided , staff always available (unless dealing with an emergency) and easy to get on with. Have had a few terminally ill patients who have been looked after very well at Basingfield Court pleasant and cheerful atmosphere. good environment One person commented that the residents say that the food is uninteresting and not very varied. Similar comments were made by some, but not all at the last key inspection. The AQAA acknowledges that the home has had some difficulty in the employment of kitchen staff but are working to improve this. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 28th August 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 6 Reader Information
