What the care home does well Proof of identification documents had been requested from nurses employed at the home with photo copies of this documents held in their individiual files. What the care home could do better: Examination of nursing staff files highlighted the following issues: Five nurses are currently employed by the home. Photocopies of nurses Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) annual registration cards which include their pin numbers were not being held by the home as evidence the nurses were on the active NMC register. Of the five files examined only one file had photocopies of nursing qualifications` gained. Records show a member of the nursing team`s registration with the NMC lapsed in July 09. The lack of systems in place resulted in this issue not being identified until 16/03/10 when a check was made on the NMC website to monitor the registration status of nurses employed. This leaves service users at risk of being supported by staff without the necessary skills, competencies, qualification and who are registered to practice with their governing body. The lack of systems in place to monitor nurses continuing professional registrations leaves service users at risk of receiving inappropriate and possibly unsafe care. The manager agreed that systems needed to be put in place and offered assurances that this would be done as a matter of urgency. However she did highlight evidence that showed as soon as the lapse in registration status had been identified the member of staff ceased working at the home until the matter had been resolved with the NMC. The home does not have a registered manager this formed the basis of a requirment made in the key inspection report visit dated the 8/05/08 and remains outstanding the registered provider is advised to address this issue as a matter of urgency. The manager was advised that requirements would be made with tight timescales to ensure compliance.
